Oh yeah - though diesel powered. The first nuclear submarine didn't come out until the mid 50's (not sure on the date) "The Nautilus"
Not only did we have submarines, but so did the English and Russians (of course - on the other side - the germans had their U-boats).

Yes. In fact the USS Pampinito is on display at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. It was used in WWII.
