Exposure therapy is typically the choice of therapists in addressing phobic disorders. This is a type of therapy that systematically introduces you to the scary situation, first in a controlled setting and usually involving visualization, and then in the actual setting. While you are facing this fear, you are asked to apply relaxation techiques, such as deep breathing to calm yourself. This is generally an effective technique because it allows the brain to begin to associate safety with the feared object. Over time, the fear becomes extinguished and replaced by positive or neutral feelings. The more you avoid the more fearful you become. It's important should you confront your fear without the help of a professional that you have a reliable support person to be with you and that you do not launch into confronting the fear as this can lead to a negative experience and greater fear.

Some 2 years ago I get claustrphobic inside a mine (mountain), lighted, 25 meter tall x 50 meter wide, thinking only at the amount of rock all over me(breathing problems, agitation etc). If you will be able to find root cause, who make you claustrophobic, and solve it by yourself, congratulations...
Me, I thought about all that rock/mountalin like a biggest and safest wall in the world.
Some advice: think you are a theaf. Who is your best friend during night? Of course...darkness. So, I would not recommend you to become a theaf to solve your claustrophia :-)))) try only to think in other ways.

whether it is or not, make yourself believe that's it's a fear all in your head and you really don't have a problem and tell yourself that nothing is going to happen to you in the dark. Remember to breathe and think of the darkness as outer space and it is not closing in on you. Good Luck!

Take deep breaths through your nose so you won't have money coming out the other end when you are at a therapist's office.

The key is relaxation. You need to relax your mind and body and while usually it is deep breathing for most people, you need to think about the happy place which can make you relax.

Actually, it's called achluophobia: http://www.aboutphobias.com/phobia/achluophobia.html

The cure for most phobias is to gradually increase your exposure to whatever you are afraid of. At some point, you won't be afraid. Of course, you can always whistle (The Sound of Music).
