i would hardly use the generalization that (latin-)americans hate speaking a second language. there are very many people who speak two, three or maybe four languages. and they are american, etc.

however, it might have something to do with the fact that the american school system doesn't really make learning a second/third language a huge priority. many schools don't even offer foreign languages. it should also be mentioned that america is a severly large country...so the whole 'we all speak english' thing doesn't really matter. that is, it isn't as if new york speaks one language and the surrounding countries three others. geography and a lack of emphasis seem to be large contributing factors.

as far as me, i speak german and english fluently, french and italian competantly and passable spanish.

The vast majority of North Americans speak English and Spanish. In Europe, there are many countries with many different languages. Some countries have many languages spoken by the locals. Though there are more languages spoken in the U.S. then anywhere else due to immigration and globalization, English is the standard and can be understood almost anywhere in the world.

Don't know that Americas hate to speak a second language. It just that - at least in the USA - we are fortunate to have a gigantic country with a single language. So there is little need to know a second language. Unlike Europe, where a hundred miles in any direction takes you to a different country, language, currencies and laws. For most Americans knowing a second language is not a priority.

As having a single language is one of the improtant factors in the growth and success of America, many American do place importance on KEEPING a single language. This has lead to some "ill feelings" against people who do not speak English. (Which is unfortunate)

I don't think anybody hates speaking a second language. I think it is very hard for many people to learn two of them. They have to know how to speak their first language well before tackling a second one.
Moreover, I know some people that speak English and Spanish that are ashamed of knowing Spanish. Which is a shame.

Cause they don't really have to. English and Spanish...
Now if you were in Europe, it would be a different story.
