it is true that macs have less viruses, but they still can get viruses. problem is, there is more people on windows, and more people who know about windows. if there was lots of info online about how to program for macs, then more mac viruses would be made, dont worry, i will make some for mac someday, but dont buy a mac, macs suck. (if i go into why without some asprin i wont be able to stay on thy comp much longer)
edit:
o, and thy retards who think that all viruses come through IE ARE SOO ******* RONG.
gosh, u dont ahve to switch to firefox to prevent viruses, currently, there are NO exploits to IE, microsoft has fixed all of them, IE is extreemly safe. most viruses come from unsecure networks, or people downloading from emails

MAC OSX is a Linux based OS. Even if millions switched to Mac, and Mac would fall prey to hackers, other hackers would close the security gaps equally quick. It's all out in the open, which also decreases the 'challenge' factor. No need to wait for Microsoft patches and service packs anymore then, and logging into Passport.. Just get an update off the net for free and you're done.

The fact is that a Mac is just as vulnerable to attack as a PC using Windows. The only difference is that the vast majority of people use Windows and therefore hackers and their ilk target them for the biggest effect. Plus, there are far more programs designed to be useful and run on Windows compared with Mac.
Also, because of Microsoft's huge success, they are a target because they are king of the hill. What fun is it to take a shot at a distant second?

No computer environment is 100% safe and secure...the only safe and secure computer is one that is turned off.
Of course, connecting to a network (like the internet) increases one's vulnerability by an order of magnitude. While we can mitigate and reduce the risks to an acceptable level, we can never entirely eliminate it.
Yes, the relative market share of Mac OS makes it a smaller target than the seemingly ubuiquitous Windows. But the real key to your question is how would you define "secure enough"?
Secure enough to work and carry on business? Any other definition may seem to be suspect or wanting.

Netstat reports that 61.5% of all web servers are running Linux. Here is a small, partial, listing:
Microsoft.com runs 15,000 Linux Servers,
Microsoft owned Hotmail.com runs 15,000 Linux Servers.
Google.com runs Linux clusters on 100,000 Linux servers.
Mac OS X is DarwinBSD. BSD is Berkeley Software Distribution (1984) version or clone of Unix.
Yahoo.com runs on FreeBSD servers.
The NYSE , and the Fortune 500 run on Linux, Mac, and BSD.
165 World governments run Linux.
Burger King, Home Depot, Burlington Coat Factory, Ernie Ball Guitar, and your cell phone, all run on Linux.
If someone really wants to be noted for being an infamous, l33t hax0r, all they have to do is 'crack' that 'small group' of the 'market'!
But, they can't crack something that is so well protected that Microsoft has to use it on all their servers! Linux, BSD, are so secure, that most financial institutions, and BANKS, use them to protect their fortunes.
Microsoft has 150,000 virus definitions. It's core system files are wide open to the Internet!

It is funny, especially since MAC is really ASKING for viruses with their latest commercials (not that I don't enjoy them). MACs are built fairly well, but the one thing I wonder is... Does Steve Jobs design his laptops like he designs the IPOD? He has been quoted saying that he hopes consumers update their IPODs on a yearly basis.

Just use the Mozilla Firefox browser instead of IE and go to Download.com and get AdAware SE and download it for free. Mozilla gets tons less viruses than IE and AdAware will get rid of them most of the time.
