I just got my new pug. He is a year and half old, and is supposed to be housebroken. Today is the first day I had him. I've taken him outside several times, encouraging him to use the bathroom. All he does is run around the yard sniffing everything. After the last time I took him out, he came in and did one lap around the house and then peed in the floor. After that he hid in the corner of my brother's room and wouldn't come out. How do I take care of this problem, without being overly mean?

I am guessing you adopted the pug from a shelter or pug rescue. The fact that he hid after he peed in the house is an indication that he was punished for doing so, but not taught how to potty correctly. Go back to basic housetraining 101 - keep him confined, introduce him room by room to the house after he is secure with the previous room. By this I mean, potty proofed in the room. Learn about clicker training - join yahoo groups Clicker Solution. Click and treat him outside when he does potty and give him a treat right then and there - don't give the treat after he has come back to the house. Dogs learn through motivation - if you provide the reward, he will learn to do the job right.

A. Before it eats the dog needs to find a spot with no other dog's scents. Let it be out their for a while then when it finds it's spot it will go.
B. Take the pug out 20 after it eats. (normal time after eating)
C. When he does use the restroom say good dog and act very happy
D. This Does take a long time so try it when you have an hour or so to waste (nothing important to do but train you dog). Because all training takes time.

He is excited by all the new and interesting smells in the area and is to excited to relax enough to do his duty. Put him on a leash and take him around the yard, let him mark his territory and he will soon not be going in the house. He knows he did wrong or he would not be hiding in a corner.

You just need to get him used to a routine and be consistant. The best way is to crate him and only allow him out for supervised play/exercise and potty breaks. And be dramatice with your praise and treats when he does go in the proper place. Work up to his free time out until you feel that he is on a routine and will no longer have accidents in the house.

If you have cable TV you can watch a program called "Dog Whisperers" with Cesar Millin He is fantastic with dogs. You can also buy his DVD's at Walmart for very little. He has great ways of training any kind of dog to do whatever and to correct his beheiver problems. You won't be sorry watching his show or getting his DVD's
Glad to help you out

When he is outside put him on a leash until he is used to it. In the house if he pees say bad dog and your dog will stop if you tell him bad dog after he pees in the house and when he dosent say good dog and give it a treat!

Keep him on a leash outside and get him to focus on the job at hand. If you allow him to run around he is going to be too excited to pee, and go inside and do it when he has relaxed a bit.

You need to get him a CRATE. That is how you housetrain a dog. He is probably nervous and confused about his new environment. Get him a crate, put a cloth in it for him and his chew toys and put him in there until its time to go out. Then he gets used to holding his stuff until he is outside. Don't spank him, that won't help. Good luck.

He's in a new place...along with new scents.Just give him a little time for the adjustment, and keep taking him outside and showing him around. It just takes patience.
