how long should it take to adopt an accent?

Have a friend from HS who within 3 years of living in Kentucky, was speaking like Uncle Jessie. Is this bunk?

It totally depends on the person. Some people pick up accents right away, some never do.

I know an Australian girl who's lived here for 12 years and still has her accent, but I also know an american girl who's lived in England for a few months and she already has an accent.

I don't do it anymore, but when I was little and had lived in Japan for a few years I got an "accent" of sorts. When I was 10 and moved back to the USA, I could NOT pronounce and "R" or an "L" sound.

It really depends on the person. I know a Brit who's lived in the U.S. for like 3-4 years and he still has his British accent, but my dad, who lived in Brazil for 2 years, got the accent in 12-18 months.

Some people adopt them faster than others. I tend to start unconsciously mimicking the accent of the person I'm speaking with. Within a couple of hours of solid conversation, I sound like their kin. It's somewhat embarassing.

After the age of 15 (basically after puberty), it is nearly impossible to lose an accent. If you are from the U.S and try to learn another language you are most likely going to keep your accent.

for me accents come easily because i'm an actress. you just have to listen to people speaking in them and then try to imitate it. i think adopting an accent is really easy and doesn't take a long time to do.

Its so natural , u can't control it, i got and accent in spanish an english like in 6 months
