Vicodin is a codeine-based pain suppressant. Codeine like all opium derivatives affects the neural receptors (nerves in the brain) that's why pain is blocked and people "feel" light-headed.
Alcohol is a depressant, as you drink you affect the central (muscle control) nervous system, that's why people "feel' relaxed and/or sleepy. To combine the effects is dangerous particularly with regards to driving a car (that's why it says on the vicodin bottle " don't operate heavy machinery.) Further, vicodin usually contains Ibuprofen or aspirin as a secondary pain reliever, and also because they both amplify the affects of codeine. Both ibuprofen and aspirin affect the liver, as does alcohol, you may not "feel" anything, or you may suddenly feel "ill" (like the husband in the answer above who went out to dinner and ordered a cocktail) in either case your liver is still being affected. There is a reason that it says "do not mix with alcohol" on the bottle. It is not a question of how you feel, but how your body is being affected, even if you feel fine. Please follow the instructions when taking any drug or medicine.

Vicodin And Wine

I would be really careful. I once thought it would be ok to have a few drinks while I was on Vicodin, and I passed out for sixteen hours! I had taken the pill, then less then an hour later I had my first glass of wine, and then two more after that, and the next thing I knew it was the next day! My jackass friends should have taken me to the hospital, but they said I sat up and opened my eyes a few times, so they knew I was ok! Idiots!
Really, be careful. You just don't know how your body will react to it. I know I never would have passed out had I not drank the wine after taking the pill. I had drank far more then that before and I didn't pass-out.

NO way! We never observe the package instructions do we? (smile) I am just as guilty, therefore I speak from experience....how about waking up in emergency with 7 folks looking at you? Everybody has a different make up and tolerance for pain and medications. Vicodin is also very addictive and the mixture of alcohol will upset the stomach so much! It's a double whammy that can cause death. Your height and weight have a lot to do with how much alcohol you can absorb and to couple that with a highly addictive drug can really cause a melt-down. Most doctors hesitate to prescribe these heavy dosed meds. Please don't drink.

Generally I would say no. I don't think a beer would kill you but i wouldn't drink more than that.

I would avoid drinking with vicodin if possible.

I take vicodin regularly and I have for years because of a car accident. I drink occasionally and sometimes quite a bit. It does not effect me badly, in fact, I dont get hang overs! However, it probably depends on things like, how many pills you take, how much alcohol you consume, and your body weight and tolerance. It is not recommended by doctors of course, but I dont see the harm if it is not in excess

They SAY no, but I used to be on vicodin for a car accident, and nothing ever happened to me. Try it tonight, when there is noone around for you to make a fool of yourself in front of, and see if you get too tipsy!
