Ok, I am a musician with huge ambitions. I find that whenever i listen to something i love, i try to emulate it to unnatural extents. I'm 17, and years ago, Blink-182 was my favourite band. I saw nothing wrong with trying to be that band. Now it's Brian Wilson, same problem! I make great music, possibly on par considering my age and experience compared to theirs'. How do I break this habit? PLEASE HELP!

It takes years to develop your own style and sound. Some of it is developed by playing a lot of other people's stuff. So now you sound like Blink 182 merged with Biran WIlson. That's different! Keep writing your own stuff. Over time it will morph and eventually you will notice that your stuff may have influence from the bands you like, but it really is unique. For the first 5 years I sounded like Rush mixed with Metallica mixed with the Cure. Now I sound like me.

wow how unnatural was your blink 182 obession?
listen every person who is in the music business had to start off somewhere with holding someone/some band as an icon for them to be like. but what they do is they use that inspiration to tweek it to be their own style. p.s. if you were more famous, would you want people unnaturally imitating you? probably not, you'd say hey make it your own, be your own person. setting a style is what being a musician's all about.

The problem you are having is that you are hearing other people's music, remembering it and then playing it. Maybe you should take some time aways from listening to music and try to work out your particular style. I can relate as I am a drummer, and I can actually tell by listening to another drummer, who his influences are. And maybe there is nothing wrong with playing like one of the greats, after all they got famous by playing their stuff.

The first thing to do is to try and create a sound that is decidedly NOT like your faves. Then you begin to create your own sound, perhaps borrowing from those you like and incorporating those of what is NOT like them.
