it boils down to " would you help someone in need" . i would because i would like to think that the person would do the same for me, who am i to judge them as dirty or homeless looking. a life is a life no matter age, race, or anything else. anyone in the medical field ethically should help when able. the oly time you shouldnt help is when you are not cpr trained , because you may do more harm than good.

I would be very wary if I didn't know the person. If I know them, and I know that they are disease-free, I would absolutely do mouth to mouth. New research shows that more compressions and less breathing are better than the old 15-2 method, so just compressions would be better than nothing. I would also probably not have a problem doing mouth to mouth with an infant or child without a barrier.

If you are going to do chest compressions without rescue breathing the patient will be brain dead without oxygen and die later. The only way I would provide rescue breathing on someone without a mask would be on a child or someone I know. Alot of the time while you are preforming CPR and rescue breathing the patient is or has vomited or has other secreations coming out of the mouth.

In the heat of the moment, it will be up to you whether you do mouth-to-mouth or let the person die. As for doing only chest massage, no matter how much effort you use to get the heart pumping, unless the body is oxygenated (air to lungs and circulated to body), that person will not survive. That is why in CPR training they teach: Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC's). No Breathing=No Survival. It's your decision!!!

There are some concerns today with mouth to mouth. My answer happens to be no. The solution, simple and cheap, is to carry a barrier device. When it comes to back pressure, arm lift, I don't know of anyone who remembers the cadence!

On a child or family member yes. I have done it at one time on a neighbour's child. Pretty scary situation, but better than nothing. The nurse said at hospital it had helped. Sometimes a situation forces you too, so you can't really say you won't as when the situation occurs- you do anything to save anyone if you know them.

hi, well you could size things up, i mean if they are obviously homeless and mangey, or obviously a crack ho or something then i wouldnt. but an everyday person who's down? sure. wouldnt think twice. chest compressions arent gonna do any good if your not getting any oxygen. you gotta have both to live.

I guess it depends who it is...if it's a family member or friend, then yes. If it's a complete stranger, then no- I'd do chest compressions only.

All these other answers about deciding who to save or not to save is crazy. How can you decide who to help, that crack ho may be someones mother. I work in an ER and treat anyone who walks in the door from the town drunk to the mayor. ( who might be the same person.}

yes, i would not hesitate to do mouth to mouth. seriously, i have a great immune system and don't gross out that easily. not too many bugs are transmitted thru the saliva
