why can't we belly dance in public without being considered a prostitute?

in the midle east women can't belly dance in public because thier considered whores. women are only supposed to belly dance for thier husbands. why is this so if belly dancing is a fertility dance that was done before the bride got married?

I have never associated belly dancing with prostitution. That is, unless the belly dancer is trading sexual favors for money....

Well I belly dance with my Vista/dance troop on the streets and we make a whole lot of money. Yes some women call us whores but they don't understand that belly dancing is the most elegant and beautiful dance form,not to be compared to lap dancing. And I would NEVER use my sex as currency,even if other people would... The world must be forgiven it's occasional ignorance.

well if you will notice many so called "pagan" religions are based on the "mother earth" or a mother diety. So that explains why they encouraged the belly dancing and being fertile etc etc. Well the big bad religions like christianity and muslim said that these "pagan" religions are works of the devil or are for evil people. So it has been beaten into society that if you do anything that relates to these religions it is bad and unacceptable. So that is why so many mindless sheep think this stuff is unacceptable. I hope this answers your question without pissing off the religious folks. :)

Because Americans have no concept of what ethnic belly-dancing is.

It's the same reason that so many skinny girls think they can belly-dance.

I just always wanna walk up and go "You can't belly-dance without a belly hun!"

You wouldn't necessarily be considered a prostitute. You would be considered an exhibitionist.
