My best friend dated this guy for a few weeks. He was over-protective and always threatened to hit her/his friends. Sometimes, he would even take pencils/pens and throw them at people that made a "mean" comment. It was always just a joke. What should we do about him?

Ignore him. totally. Never respond to him in any way.
If he continues to follow you, or cause problems, call you, etc, file stalking charges against him and/or a restraining order.

Get away and as far as you possibly can from that person. If he is abusive that will not change, no matter what.
If your friend insists on staying with this person, then just stay away from her as well, but have a sincere and honest talk with her, offer support when needed but tell her to be aware that violent abusers ofen first isolate the woman and then little by little start eroding their self confidence until they either kill her or batter her into submission. Tell your friend to watch the Burning Bed with Farrah Fawcett, it's an old movie or to talk to someone at a woman's shelter for abused women. That should wake her up to the dangers. Unfortunately, nothing you can do will help unless she is willing to dump that person and save her integrity and her life. Women sometimes fall into a trap where they think they can change that person and then try to justify that attitude by saying the person loves her. If your friend decides to dump the guy she will need a lot of support from her friends, these individuals are tenacious and persistent, if necessary get a restraining order. Sounds like a joke. Well, it isn't.

In situations like this, a lot of these problems is cause by the certain amount and type of attention he is getting. Another thing is that, there could be a big problem in his home. Do not runaway from him, just be his friend and try not to make any foolish comments or jokes about him. If he still follows you that simple means that he needs friends to be with. Try to sit him down, as friends and talk to him about his problems. Offer him your shoulder for him to lean on because you can make a difference in this young man's life.

Next time he follows you around, call the cops. What he is doing isn't right and I am pretty sure it is illegal. I would not be friends with the guy, I would not have anything to do with him.
Honestly, if I were you I would have a couple of your guy friends go knock the crap out of him and hopefully get his mind on right.

My only advice is not to do anything with him. But to take yourselves out of situations with him. By that I mean to not see him anymore. You cant change others. He is violent and making threats probably for attention and the more he gets it the more he will behave this way. Your friend needs to move on and be with someone with a more amiable temper.

Just tell her to stay away and let her parents know so that they may keep a close eye on her....If she's still young. If not she should try to stay away from him on her own and let someone know to keep an eye on her.

I think you should convince him that such violent behavior is not logical at all and ask him to stop it. Then you can give him another chance. If he did all that again, there'd be no more reasons not to be away from him.

I liked the first guy's answer. I'm glad she broke up with him. You two - and her friends - should stay away from him.
