My fiance is an American citizen and is wanting to move to Canada to live with me. We are thinking about eloping, but after we get married would that mean he would be able to live in Canada? If not, does anybody know what steps he should take in order to get over here. Also, would he need to get visa's until he becomes a citizen?

In order for him to come here you two should be married as there is no fiancee' sponsorship. Just because you two are married doesn't give him the automatic ok to be here.... personal experience(my husband is American) He doesn't need a visa to be here unless he wants to work. As long as he has a passport, he can stay up to 6 months and then apply for an extension.

The application is called a spousal sponsorship, and you can either do it while he resides in the US. Or he can move to Canada and you can apply from within. Just a side note on the paper work, it is whatever you are willing to live with.

If he stays in the US, he fills out the paper work and sends it to you. If he comes to Canada you fill out the paper work and he stays there. When you sign that sponsorship agreement you are agreeing to take care of his basic needs for anywhere between 3-10years. (Food/Shelter/Medical, etc...) It is a long process and a lot of paperwork to be filled out on both parts. This isn't just his process, it is yours as well. There are medicals and security screening, possibly interviews etc.... all taking anywhere from 6 months to 16months. Fees for applications and visas will be around $1200 and that isn't including the extra stuff he needs to do.

The website I listed is what you need to know, with guides to look at for filling out paperwork and documents needed. There is also a phone number you can call to ask questions.

You know as much as I do...good luck

Hmmm....interesting.

I do know one thing, after a bit of research...it is certainly easier for an American to come to Canada then vice versa.

I'm trying to figure out how to be able to work in the U.S....it's not easy. So, when you find your answer, let me know, and maybe I can reverse it!

Best wishes, and congratulations on your good news.
