I know that there was a severe drought that created the dust bowl, which caused many people to lose their land and have to move to find work (remember the novel The Grapes of Wrath?)...the Depression obviously, but that was at the end of the decade...not sure what else...

That would be what they called the "Dust Bowl". Because of poor farming techniques the soil wouldn't support vegetation any longer and the weather patterns either made mud or dust. People couldn't even go outside lots of times because their nostrils and eyes would fill with dust. People died and so did their poor crops. It wasn't until people were educated on better farming techniques did the problem abate.

the top soil got so dry that it blew away, and Midwestern and Western farmers were devastated - several federal programs involved, etc... inspired Grapes of Wrath (a famous novel)

i guess that you are talking about the great depression. rent or read the grapes of wrath. there was also prohibition this made everyone mad that they could not drink away their problems.
