Drink lots of water and clear liquids. Limit caffine intake to 1-2 servings per day. I suffer from the same problem, and have been told that eliminating the foods that trigger the problem can be just as bad as eating too much of the foods. I am down to about 2-3 stone attacks (painful, obstructing ones) per year. Which is a vast improvement to the 3 times a month i was dealing with. Eat a moderate about of calcium, about 900 Mg per day, and try not to dehydrate.

I had kidney stones when I was 9 yrs. old, now I'm 20, I was going to undergo lithotripsy which was state of the art back then, they might have new technology for getting rid of kidney stones...Anyway, I do highly recommend to take your meds as prescribed. One thing that really helped the stones dissolve is drinking a lot of cranberry juice. Another suggestion would be to cut back on your intake of red meat and soda/coffee (caffeine). In the end, I didn't even need surgery. they haven't recurred.

I feel very bad for your husband - I've had kidney stones too and they're just hellish. But, I haven't had any for a long time. I think the best answers are to avoid a lot of calcium in the diet and drink water endlessly.
When I had them, my doctor told me to drink 1 glass (8 oz, 1 cup, or 10 large swallows) of water every 1.5 hours, round the clock if you can. It's easier if it's not real cold.

To cut down/out the Morphine, ya gotta avoid the stones.
To avoid the stones, takes drinking lots of water ( soup & broth count, too, & taste better ! )
AND...avoiding calcium, but not altogether, as you DO need some.
A dr could help with that. Stones are made from different things, ask what things to avoid to stop those particular stones from forming.
( Been there, don't want to go there again ! )

drink lots of water and don't dehydrate, uric acid crystalizes when you dehydrate and everything sticks to it. so drink lots of beverages. I had to have one removed with lythotripsy it was pretty big. I quit dehydrating and they have for the most part quit. every year or 2 I get a small one that usually passes.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Miserable...........my GP advised against Topamax (for me) for just that reason, family history of severe kidney stone attacks. She also said Topamax is very bad for your eyes. I started on Epival instead. Cut back on meats, eat fresh fruit, and drink LOTS of water. Perform weight bearing exercises as well.
