I want to use a webcam(or some other kind of camera) as kind of like a secondary video input for a digital video camera. can this be done?

I realize now that this was a poorly thought-out question, since webcams require software to operate, and i wanted to connect it to a camcorder directly, no pc involved. is this possible with any other kind of smart optical device, like a digital camera?

If you can find an adapter that would convert a standard usb cable, to a one that fits a digital camera, I would say, probably not.

YES you can!

Who says you can't? I hook up my camcorder via FireWire and that's all. All of my software already knows that it is there.
Programs like VirtualDub, Ulead Media Studio, Pinnacle, etc.. see it. Even Yahoo's webcam can see it.

All you need to do is go into the webcam config and locate the camcorder.

nope, you just plug the webcam into the computer and use your digital camera separately connected to the computer whenever transferring the pictures or video.
