Why? Are you feeding them to your boa constrictor?
A good pup can cost $1000 or more. Even "free" dogs cost money to take care of. Puppy shots are $200, then $100 a year for boosters. Annual Heartworm test and preventative medication $100. Professional trainer $600 and up. Going on vacation? Boarding kennel $40/day. Spaying? $250. If you can't afford to pay for a good dog, maybe you can't afford to maintain one either?

You could get a rabbit or a guinea pig - they're easy to keep, live in a cage, don't have to be walked or trained.

You can check the bulletin board, but even free dogs come with expenses. Chances are, a puppy free in the paper won't have all of it's shots, any toys, a crate, or anything it might need.

Make sure that you are ready for the financial commitment a dog is.

If you need to find a "free" dog because you can't afford to pay for one (humane societies charge anywhere from 50 to 100 & up) then maybe you should reconsider getting one at all. Dogs are expensive to keep. There are yearly vaccinations, flea/tick medications, yearly heartworm testing & preventatives, food, toys, collars, leashes & not to mention those emergencies that can happen no matter how careful we are. I am not trying to discourage you from getting a pet but you may want to get one that is not going to be so costly if you can't afford it. Being a pet owner is wonderful but it is a responsibility & is costly. Loving an animal isn't enough unfortunately. You don't need to be rich to have a pet but you need to be willing & be able to afford the necessities.

Dogs are NOT ever really free. You have to pay for shots and a licence. I suggest adopting from your local humane society or ASPCA. I did, and I got the best little dog anyone could ask for. He was $80 for shots and licence. You will also need to purchase Heartworm prevention, like Heartguard, and that isn't free either. Just some things to think about. Good luck to you.

Well, for not free but $50, you could find all sorts of dogs at your local pound, including those that don't grow very large, AND you won't have to pay to spay/neuter them or get them their first round of shots.

Look for rescue groups for specific breeds (chihuahuas or pomeranians) or contact your local shelter. They are usually very upfront about which dogs will stay small and which ones don't. There are no guarantees. LOL. My purebred Pom is the BIGGEST in the litter and BIGGER than his parents! :) He looks like a mini- Chow Chow. He's more the size of a Corgi than a Pom. But we love Giz anyway. :)

your local vet would be the best place to start. They will make sure the dog is healthy. They can tell you what breed it is, how big it will get, the whole 9 yards and you will be able to trust them.

When I got my cats we got them from the local animal shelter and they even "fixed" them for nothing!

Try those 2 out!

go to your local pound and ask the carers for their advice. the pound should always be the first port of call when looking for a pet because otherwise these animals are destroyed, and many lovely dogs come from the pound.
