The answer is contained in the question... validation. One's beliefs are a key component of one's 'self-description'. Validation of beliefs reinforce sense of self and self-importance. By the same token, a disagreement with their beliefs is perceive as an attack upon the self... hence the typical antagonistic response... really a manifestation of fear.

I could answer your question in two possible ways:
1. Yeah, I agree with you. People like to have their beliefs reinforced rather than questioned, and that can be almost close-minded. People should be more open to opposition if it's logical and rational. Respecting others' beliefs can, in essence, reinforce your own.
2. People can come on here and do whatever they want. Freedom of speech and freedom of choice. If I want to chose a best answer that is in complete accordance to what I believe, then I'll do it. I mean, you could very well be doing the same thing, right?
So, which answer would you hold in higher regard - the one that agrees with you, saying that people should be more questioning, or the one that opposes you but questions you?
My real answer to the actual question: Because that's what beliefs are about - validation. People want to know that they are not alone in believing something.

I totally agree. I think this happens way more in the religious & political sections than it dos in any other. Most people don't really want an open discussion of the issue. They just want someone to kiss their butt. This can be said about both liberals and conservatives, Christians & everybody else (because, let's face it- that's how Answers people are divided).
My favorite Best Answers that I've gotten are from people who had completely different views about a subject but respected my response because it was logical & thought-out. The worst ones are "Don't you hate it when" questions. Ugh!

I don't care what is validated or not. It's all about the glory of God! The Scripture says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling," so they need to spend more time in the Book than seeking "validation" for something God validated on the Cross in His own Blood.

I am in love with a man, this man's name is God. Would that make me gay for God? Youre damn right it would. I am completely gay for God.
