I have some stale sunflower seeds and was thinking of throwing them out in the yard for the birds. The shell is heavily salted though. Do you think that will bother the birds, even though they only eat the inside?

Sunflower seeds really are not very good for birds, they are more like a narcotic and birds can become addicted to them. Other then the trace oils in sunflower seed there really isnt that much nutrutional value, also the salt content is too high. I wouldnt give them to any bird.

Some songbirds will find sunflower seeds too big to open. Doves eat seeds, hull and all. I would suggest just throwing them away. The salt may cause sever dehydration in a bird, especailly if they eat a lot of them.

Sunflower seeds are addicting so if you feed them in the future try to find seed that has fewer sunflower seeds. In the winter you should feed them more than in the summer because they are high in fat for birds.
