A few thoughts.

As stated in The Holy Bible, G*d created man in his own image. Did Adam have a bellybutton? If so, it would seem to follow that his Creator had one as well.

Eve was created from Adam's rib. Would she have had a bellybutton?

As far as I know, no portraits of Adam or Eve have been found that would definitively give proof.

It may also be a possibility that including bellybuttons on the painted images of Adam and Eve were the result of an oversight that continued on as traditional paintings throughout the years. Perhaps too, if the question had been imagined or posed during the times of these old paintings, the one who dared to ask could have risked ridicule, banishment, imprisonment, or death.

Thank you for a very interesting, thought provoking question.

You have to remember during these periods in antiquity, people did not speak out with regard to religion as they do now. Any teachings or talk that wasn't sanctioned by the Holy Roman Catholic church was highly dangerous. If the masses had started debating belly buttons in Renaissance Europe, there would have been a massacre. This was a time when scientists and artists feared for their lives and/or their souls if they caused consternation among Vatican dignitaries. Also artists of this time were commissioned, mainly by the church for these works (also very rich people) and there were traditional depictions of religious themes that were adhered to. It's not a question of any form of correctness, the paintings had to express what was expected by the patron.

The short answer is, because the artists thought it looked better. Supposedly a painting of a naked man and woman without navels looks unnatural.
Of course, since the belly button is a scar, there's no reason for it to exist in God's supposed first people, although he might have given it to them anyway just so their first descendants wouldn't think theirs was some sort of mutation.

cause they were done during the rennaisance era where the perfect human was adored. the best art during that era was supposedly the most realistic of the perfected greek human (hence david etc) to have no belly buttons would have made them awkward and therefore not beautiful...

ps for those of you (especifically girl above me) who dont understand the question, it was asked because belly buttons come from umbillical cords from the mothers womb and adam and eve were created by the hand of God--therefore they had no umbillical cords and presumably no belly buttons.

Bellybuttons come from when God created Man out of clay. While He waited for Man to dry, He poked him on a stick. After that, its genetics. Bellybuttons got passed to Eve through the DNA of Adam's rib...

Because God made them in his own image and he had two belly buttons, so, thats one each! And he "let them go naked in the world" so they wouldn't get any of that blue fluff in them.
