U2 frontman Bono is to be this year's recipient of the Humanitarian Award at the Meteor Ireland Music Awards at the Point Theatre on 3 March.
The award is in recognition of Bono's work in focussing world attention on the problems faced by the developing world, from International Debt burdens to the devastation Aids is wreaking across Africa.
The award comes with a donation of €100,000, which Bono has chosen to share equally between the Irish charities Goal and Concern.
U2 has donated 40,000 euro to a struggling charity in the Irish Republic which helps survivors of sexual abuse.
Concern Worldwide has warmly welcomed the donation of €50,000 from U2 front man Bono, following his receipt of the Humanitarian Award in the annual Meteor Ireland Music Awards.
In '95 Bono was joined by Pavarotti and released the Passengers Soundtrack, for the benefit of the War Child charity and the Cradle Foundation. Of particular interest is the song Miss Sarejevo which is about a beauty contest during the war in Bosnia. Contestants in the video, which was smuggled out of the country, held up signs pleading for help. After things calmed down, U2 returned and gave an free concert in Sarejevo.
The band also gave a surprise free concert in Ireland. In support of AIDS, U2 sang on the album Red Hot & Blue. The band has also done several other concerts in support of a variety of campaigns including Live AID, Net Aid, Self Aid, War Child and The Big One, a peace concert. Bono also had a big part in organizing the tribute song What's Going On, which was originally done to benefit AIDS, but was modified so that some of the proceeds would also benefit the Sept. 11th Fund. Some of us only joke about doing something to improve the world, while others, like Bono, obviously do something.
So, just out of curiosity, what have you done lately to help fight world poverty?

Bono is a self-professed emissary of justice, in the end he managed to do little more than lend his credibility--or whatever is left of it--to the very people who oversee and justify the inequalities that characterize our world.
He was up there bear-hugging G8 leaders like they actually did anything to stop the poverty in Africa. It was an outrage to people who have been seriously working on this issue for decades.
Of course he doesn't spend HIS money! He won't even speak critically about the corporations who refuse AIDS medications for so many in Africa.
Bono is the same oportunist he always was. He rose to fame feigning some IRA supporter bullshit, then denounced violence. He is a fraud.

On the one hand, that's a darned good question.
On the other hand, none of us-whether we are rich or poor-is required to donate diddly. Why do you think that just because he is rich, he should donate all his wealth?
But just for kicks...If I bought every U2 album from October all the way up to the Unforgettable Fire, then I got the ones I really really liked after that, like Pop, and if Bono then gives a huge chunk of his money to combat poverty, then in a way, haven't I already contributed?

Bono is one of the few celebrities who actually uses his popularity to focus on real problems..and he doesn't just whine, he does something about it. Yeah, he could solve a bunch of the problem by just handing over his money...but it is not solely his responsibility...he is not the only human on the planet. I will admit it is annoying to have millionaire celebrities asking me, who is sometimes paycheck to paycheck to send cash....
however, if I had a microphone, and a captive audience...I wouldn't be able to stop myself either.

Why wouldn't you help your fellow earthling, it's the rich peoples fault I agree, because the money system is an accounting practice only, there is no real value in gold silver or any monetary system.
We use money, but the same people that set value can change that value.
poverty exist because the people setting monetary values need it to off set values for the rich, which is only an illusion real as it may seem

It would be great if they would target the real issues, stop the waste of those honest wage earners that have been sucked up by corrupt governments and made real changes instead of just talking about it.
