That's a good question. Dogs don't really have a whole lot of facial expressions to speak of. However you can tell their moods based on the positioning of their ears, and their eyes. For example when a dog is surprised his ears will be perked up and eyes wide open. If the dog is sad or upset for one reason or another his ears droop and eyes slightly open. A tail between the legs also adds to their emotional state.

They have facial muscles, right?
Then they can express emotion.
However, be careful in what you read into it. A good example is showing teeth. People smile (show our teeth) to say we are happy or pleased. Dogs show their teeth to show agression. Your dogs body and facial movements can't be interpreted like you would a humans. When he looks at you with those big eyes, he isn't sad. He's wondering what pack leader wants to do next, or sometimes challenging for authority.

Yes, i would definetly say so. If you yell at a dog its ears go down, its mouth shuts and it gives you those big sorry eyes. But when you play with it, its mouth is open. Its facial muscles are strtetced out just as if a human were smileing. I hope that helped you.

Yes, but it's hard to tell what they're doing. My dog's eyes will get really wide and she'll open her mouth (not panting) and that's how she smiles. When she tilts her head it means she's really listening to what i'm saying. It's weird, but after a while you learn what things your dogs do mean.

I have seen dogs smile when they are happy. Mine does not smile, but I have seen dogs at the shelter who smile when you pay them attention. Some show their teeth, some just pull back the corners of their mouth.
My dog will frown when she gets in trouble. Her ears will go down, her head goes down, and her mouth gets tight. Her eyes are not as open as when she is happy. When she is happy she sings.

Maybe - not as well as we do - I can tell when my dogs are happy or upset - but sometimes I try to make them laugh and they don't. I also make faces at them and they just sit there - they don't smile or react at all. But, when I get mad and raise my voice - they put their head down and act sorry. I just wish they could laugh or smile. It must suck to not be able to laugh.
