do people still use pigeons to carry messages in this day and age?

In some large, congested cities in Britain, racing pigeons are trained to deliver blood samples from outlying clinics to the main laboratory because it is faster than either delivery by automobile or bicycle messenger. Results are then faxed back or entered in a computer database.

Yes, and no. It has turned into a hobby or a sport. Many people teach pigeons the same way they did back in the WWI era, but they are less likely to send a message. Some do it for the novelty of it.
Some places that are more barren, like Britain and Ireland, they are much faster due to the lack of a constructed road system throughout the country.

I may try this with my pigeons since I own some but It would have too be a very good hommer.

Yes, but it is very rare. I went to my parent's, friends house, and wen i went into the basement it was FULL of caged pigeons. Weird.
