Christians are saying the Crusades weren't Christian? Of course they were Christian. The word crusades means "war of the cross."

Next they'll be denying the Inquisition had Christian connections.

By the way: The first crusades were in 1095. The Protestant reformation occurred during the 16th century.

First, I don't know where you got your information, but Christians do not deny the Crusades. You have also, to understand that the Crusade was not just Christians, it involved many different groups. These days, the Crusade is mostly referred to the Christians, For your information, as is the Jihad is to Muslims.
Have you ever wondered how did the Muslims expand all the way to Spain? It was not in a peaceful manner, but by war. The first Crusade was to retake the Holy land from the Muslims who took it over from the Christians, By WAR.

WAR is hell no matter who is in the war. No one is innocent when it comes to war, and the Muslims do have their share in killing others. Check out Sudan today, and see what the Muslims are doing in that country as we speak. The Crusade is past tense, move on, and make today better, rather than continue with pointing fingers who is worse.

I have not met any Christians that deny the crusades. I figure with over 2000 years under the belt---there are bound to be some screw ups! Look at how some missionaries forced natives to convert.

We are all growning and learning---every organization on earth has failed to live up to standards at one point or another. After all, we are 'mere humans'. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes----

BTW, whats up with the fool up above that thinks Catholics are not Christian----for 1500 years Catholics were the ONLY christian church there was!

Christianity is not synonymous with Catholicism or Anglicanism. There was a time when Christianity was held hostage by the Catholic church (1,000 years+), and later by the king of England. It was not until after the reformation that true Christianity was able to rise up without being slaughtered by those two "churches". Read history. More that 50 million Christians were murdered by the Catholic church and the church of England over a 1200 year period. The Masons are connected to the Catholic, Anglican, and Mormon church.

The crusades occurred between 900 and 1300 AD. There were no "protestants" or "catholics" in the sense you mean here.

The reason "Christians" say that the Crusades were not "christian" is that they violate the actual teachings of Christ regarding the kind of faith we have and the kind of influence we are supposed to provide to other people.

Think of it this way: let's imagine for a second that all of the people who burn flags are people who have, at one time or another, attended public schools. Is it right, then, to say that attending public schools is the reason people burn flags?

Now: let's imagine that there is a public school superintendent who is himself an advocate of flag-burning, and all of his students regularly burn flags. Would it then be right to say that attending public schools causes one to burn flags -- even though by a long shot most people who attend public schools do not burn flags?

This is exactly the historical situation of the crusades: one particularly-powerful political figure who was also placed in authority in the church caused some of his followers to do something frankly at odds with the teachings of Christ. Blaming all Christians -- or the philosophical system of Christianity -- for the evil intentions and orders of a small group of sociological members of that group is an overstatement.

Hope that helps.

The Crusades, despite very recent historical re-writing, were a series of defensive actions taken against the powerful and war-like armies of Islam, who by the time the First Crusade was called, had occupied most of the Christian World, murdered and killed hundreds of thousands of Christians, destroyed hundreds of Churches, raped millions of Christian women and invaded Europe to the point where Rome itself was threatened.

I don't know... It seems that they don't want that on the image of "christianity" as they try to make it pure and "holy". They tend to forget a few things that are expressed in the Bible, such as "Avoid even the appearance of evil"... which Christianity has... So I guess they try to "avoid" it by saying "they weren't REAL christians" (that argument is so stupid).

And I know why they don't like Freemasons... my husband is one. They keep "secrets" (hehe... so secret they had a special on it on A&E about 5 yrs ago ROFL)... and a lot of conspiracy theories are floating around about how the Freemasons are taking over the world. Which I find really weird, most of the people I have met who hate freemasonry are usually the one's stating that our founding fathers were christians and started this country as a christian nation... yet damn near every one of our founding fathers were *Gasp* Freemasons!

Agh...something that everyone needs to understand is that "Christianity" has done NOTHING...you are discussing the actions of men that claim Christianity as the reason for their doings...but the is not "Christian" in and of itself.
As I have stated before to some questions on this site...there is evil in this world, but it is not caused by religion...it is caused by men and THEIR dogma. So if you wish to push blame on anyone, put your blame on MEN, not on Christianity.
Christianity is the following of the Christ...that's it, end of story. And even then, Christianity is not an "object"; Christianity can do nothing. Only the evil of men that twist and obscure cause "issues".
So please...stop blaming "Christianity" for the Crusades...that was men, not Christianity. And Freemasons are not a "part" of Christianity...they might be linked, but that does not make them Christian. Please learn the meaning of words...it will save everyone a headache.

When the cruzades took place the Catholic Church was corrupt and misguided. By selling indulgences, in this case "forgiveness of sins" by means of a papal document to be presented to Saint Peter at the pearly gates, the Catholic Church gathered up fighters and the such to go and free Jerusalem from the Muslims and also to protect pilgrims there. The cruzades were not a Christian effort, they were a political move in the interest of a corrupt church.
Mr. M on cruzades.

I don't think there were any protestants at the time of the crusades. The protestant religeon came about when Henry V111 wanted to divorce Ann Boleyne which was frouned upon by the catholic church.I've nether heard them say it was unchristian but then again they're such HIPOCRITES & there lies the answer. Catholics & protestants were however involved in Bush & Blairs crucade against Iraq..
