It depends on if you'll be doing it yourself or getting a contractor.
If you're doing it yourself, you need to figure out what you need to hire an expert for and what you can do on your own. For instance, taking a wall off your house is probably something you want to get someone else to do, but buying drywall at Home Depot you can do yourself.
Generally, getting a contractor is much more expensive, but it's also much quicker. Try using http://www.contractors.com/h/findcontractor/ to find a contractor near you.
Good luck!

Price everything first. Since I don't know what you are doing or having done, it is really hard to give you real hard numbers. I'll use a kitchen remodel as an example. Visit home improvement stores to price cabinets. Kraftmaid and other manufacturers have websites that will assist in determining the number and dimensions of the cabinets for your space. Know the square footage of the area. Price appliances, flooring, fixtures, lighting, hardware, sink, counters, window treatments, deciding as you go what bells and whistles are essential or desired. If you are drywalling, building walls, subflooring, ect. price the materials needed. If you are hiring contractors, get at least 3 estimates, check referrals, license, bonding, worker's compensation and insurance. If you are adding a room, they can also tell you the approximate costs per square foot to add on (i.e. in my area it is around $240 per square foot).

Get a couple different contractors out there. They will help you come up with some ideas. I am actually redoing my house right now. All in all I am spending 42,000 but I am getting a new garage built an island put in the kitchen and I had the patio redone with the roof extended. I did a LOT of research in the city I live in, and found many ideas from having a couple contractors share their own ideas. Also, ask them to bring books with them of projects they have completed for other people.

Think in terms of what you wish to change and why. If you have several areas you wish to remodel, which would give you a greater return on your investment, if for some reason, you had to sell right away. Kitchens and bathrooms return the greatest value.
