Actually it is a vegetable. It is a cousin to cucumber, squash, and pumpkin. But many regard it as a fruit, just as most people think tomato is a vegetable when, in reality, it is a fruit. Also, it is very high in lycopene; even more than tomatoes, and therefore very good for you.

Watermelon is a fruit in both senses of the word. The scientific definition of a fruit is it is the part of a plant that contains the seeds. But there is also a basic use definition that says that fruits are sweet and don't need to be cooked to be eaten. A more vexing issue is whether a tomato or a cucumber is a fruit - here the scientific and standard defintions clash.

If it has a seed in it. It is a fruit. Even things we call vegetables are in fact fruit. Like a cucumber, squash, zucchini, pumpkin, green beans, Lima beans, tomatoes, chili peppers, bell peppers. But we use these as vegetables in the food service industry.

It is a fruit, as are most foods that have seeds contained within a pithy core. Many, though, are classified as vegetables for the purpose of government taxes and tariffs (i.e. tomatoes).
