Call the jail that you think they might be housed at. Some jails have websites (but not all of them) that you can visit to check inmate status.

There is a service called Victom Identification & Notification Everyday (VINE) that you can seach - look up VINE on Google - the site is VINENET.? It then links to the states and you can go from there. You can also look in your states judiciary info - Maryland's allows you to search by name and get docket info - when are court dates scheduled, what has happened in the case.

Good luck - also the VINE allows you to enter a e-mail or phone to be notified of changes in the status of the person - if they get released, transfer to a different jail etc.

Sometimes a general google will work. If you can narrow it down to state and county, so much the better. If you know the town, you can call the detention center yourself, after all it is a matter of public record.
