A few years ago I also became concerned about the environment and one of the first things I did is to take an on-line course from a local college. It turned out to be a great experience and brought me up-to-speed on a who range of environmental issue much faster than any other way I can think of. That is what I would recommend.

I am an environmental regulator. I'm sorry to say that things have gone terribly bad for the environment these days. All environmental programs are now just political programs. Its quite true. In reality no one seems to care too much, including the media.
If you really want to make a difference, do it for the environment. Too many activists get caught up in the power and politics and that's all they end up caring about. Dig, ask tough answers. It won't be easy. Environmental protection costs money. There's no more money left.

Change the way you live. Try to find locally produced food, energy, etc. Support local efforts to save green space and develop local sources for food and energy. Recycle everything. Only buy what you need.
