I want to start a project with my friends to help people in my comminuty (Harrisburg Pa area). There are many people here that are 'socially bankrupt' (they will take a handout - but will not accept real 'help' - and do not desire to try to help themselves). I want to find a way to communicate to these people that there are 'good people' around here who actually care, and want to help.

I have several friends (about 15 families) who are (or may become)interested in being part of this project - but probably would only be able to commit to actual 'work' every other week or at best once a week (we all have kids and full-time jobs).

I think that I can 'raise' about $100 a month (maybe more) to put towards this project. Perhaps if it becomes more sucessful, I could convince our church 'youth-group' to be part of it as well (one of my friends is the youth pastor of my church).

Can you start a mentoring program? Show by example that it's better to work on problems rather than give up and just accept handouts.

We live in Michigan (flint) which was once a big G.M town now there's almost nothing, but my wife and i work at a food bank up there, and we feel great satisfaction knowing we are helping some one. a lot of times the food banks only use volunteers. at our food bank we sort food that comes in the good from the bad. we also make food box's for the Seniors. i would see if you have a food bank in your area i know they would love the help

Your best bet is to leave any food items at your local food bank or things such as clothing blankets at a local homeless shelter.Hmmm,"Socially Bankrupt"....... Also donate your items and remain anonymous. "Let others benefit from your kindness as you remain in the shadow".

Please do a quick need assessment survey, involving your community/people!
You can start from teenagers/school drop outs/youth, transformation from useless to used less to use full should be the approach!
