When it is still perfectly legal for students to pray if they wish to do so?

Because there is no more mandatory prayer. It used to be that when school started, the teacher would lead the class in prayer. If parents didn't want their children to be forced to participate for various reasons (often because they were non-Christian and didn't want their children forced to participate in Christian prayer), they could request that their children be allowed to leave the classroom for the duration of the prayer. That's how it was when my parents went to school), but that has been ruled unconstitutional.

What Christians mean when they say prayer has been banned is that mandatory prayer has been banned and they would like it to be reinstated.

Because people who don't understand the law enforce it, in many places, as if it has been completely banned.

Judge Samuel B. Kent, US District judge, Southern District of Texas: “Any student uttering the word ‘Jesus’ would be arrested and incarcerated for six months.”

It should be perfectly legal for those who wish to pray to do so; however, that's not the case.

I don't know why they keep saying it. It's rather annoying... I guess because I can't tell if they are ignorant of the law itself... or if they are just outright liars and trying to start something. But, I swear, if they ever get it passed to have LEAD prayer, I will be among the first to get up there to demand that Pagans, Jews, Muslims, etc all have their time in the limelight as well. And I'm bettin that will end it all real quick. ^_^

It is no longer legal to have the Lord's Prayer over the announcements in the morning, nor are teacher's allowed to teach from the bible as fact.

Because they're either ignorant or liars.

I began attending school in Texas, the "buckle of the bible belt," in the mid 1950's and we never prayed in school.

I don't know who started the rumor about praying, but it wasn't eliminated because it didn't happen.

Teach what from the bible? Taxpayers aren't paying teachers to waste time teaching Sunday School.

The fact is organized pray is banned, by a law suite won by Madlin O'Hair. Do the research.

But as long as there are pop-quizzes there will always be prayer.

Think about it.

Prayer lead by a staff member is illegal. Students can pray all they want on their own.

Joecoolug is the kind of christian I despise: He either knows he's lying or ought to know it, and he does it anyway because deep down, he believes that his god really won't mind a lie told for the "right" reasons!

Public prayer is not illegal in any state.

ACLU says no prayer, bible reading or references to God at school. SOMETIMES IF A STUDENT WANTS TO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT THEY CAN HAVE AN AFTER hours prayer group. Sorry I hit caps lock.
