That is by far the best question I've read on here to date. Unfortunately, we'll never know the true answer to it because it's impossible to understand. I guess you'd have to actually believe that "God" created us in the first place. I personally, believe that all the right elements were present one day and we spontaneously emerged and have ever since been evolving. I've done extensive research on the Bible and alot of it does not make sense. Also there cannot exist both the science of history and the creation of history. It's one or the other and so far my money's on the "other".

I believe he created earth/mankind for us. We just happen to not appreciate what he gave us. Now, as you can see,we are destroying what he gave us and I know you are an intellligent person, I just read your Q&A page, his creation of earth and mankind is intended as a learning experience for us all. He has given us the Ten Commandments which are pretty much easy to live by if you compare to what He has given us.
Those 10 thing are all He wanted us to do and we couldn't even do that! I believe that in the not to distant future, life as we know it will no longer exist. He will be giving all who have learned from this experience, even those that have died and lived right will be resurrected. The earth will return to its original creation and he will give those people that have been chosen by HIM another chance to populate the world and live in peace, forever! Scientifically speaking I have read that there is really no reason for the human body to die, it regenerates itself continuously. I believe it is all of the toxins in the air, food supply, and water that make us sick and die. I am not as smart as you are and its harder for me to explain something this complex, but hopefully you will get something out of what I said. I could also direct you to someone more knowledgeable and articulate than I am if you would like. (I think this is the longest answer I have ever written!!
Oh, why would HE need an ego boost, and how could He ever be bored?

We were created to worship the Lord. I would not call it ego, because I am happy to be here. The Lord has made you, he has given you everything you have, what is wrong with worshipping him? He has promised an eternity of joy and happiness for those who do, don't you want to be eternally happy? When you worship the Lord he will bless you, when you fail to worship the Lord the devil will take up residence in your life and you will share your eternity with him in misery.

Oh, here we go again. But, Ok. Only this time pay attention huh?
God had existence. And he enjoyed it. So, because he loved us.. Yeah, here's the tough part. God is love. When he has a concept, that concept is reality even before you can feel it see it, touch it, etc. I know, you don't believe in gamma rays because they can't be seen, etc., but just stay with it a minute, OK?
So anyhow, he loved us before he even made us. And he decided to share existence. He gave us free will because he didn't want to make robots. Robots don't really experience existence. So with free will we could even disobey his laws without being struck dead.
Then he gave us the rules to live in Utopia. In we followed them, then after our bodies wore out we would live in Utopia forever. If we didn't follow them, we obviously didn't want to live in Utopia, so after our bodies wore out we are granted that wish, too. Everybody gets what he wants.
Just like terrorists all want to be martyred, so gather them all together and blow them all up and make them happy. We can't do that, but he can.
See how simple it is?
P.S. To those who think we were made to serve God, OK. But how do we do that? By serving our fellow man. Jesus said that and that he would use it as his Judgement yardstick.

it isn't us leaving earth to bypass to heaven, that's God coming to earth to make it heaven. Now I observed a sparkling heaven and a sparkling earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had gave up the ghost. also there become no extra sea. Then I, John, observed the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride embellished for her husband. and that i heard a noisy voice from heaven declaring, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with adult males, and he will live with them, and they are going to be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. Revelation 21:a million-3

He created all things for His pleasure. No He didn't need an ego boost. He created us to be love us and be loved by us as his children. An artist creates because it is his or her passion, just as we are God's passion.

That is what I say everyday and I believe :
I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth.
There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.
