I had mine chemically straightened and it was straight, but Poofey. I hated it and would still blow dry it every day. So my hair was fried. I had colored it, straightened it and was blow drying it all the time.
I now have my wavy locks back and purchased a ceramic flat iron from the beauty supply. Its about $150. I LOVE IT. It gives me the sleek, shiney, Jennifer Aniston hair. Dont get one from the place in the mall, get it from the place where hair-dressers get their stuff. I dont have to put flat out in it at all. Just air dry, and flat iron the next day. I have a small 1/2" one so it can get closer to my scalp.
Another bouns is if I am at the beach or desert, I can wear the wavy look and not bother with blow drying it. Flat irons are less electricity and dont heat up the whole bathroom.

I've used both and I find that though the chemical is harsh, it only damages the hair temporarily while the straightener damages daily. If I didn't enjoy my hair curly as well as straight, I'd use chemical again in a heartbeat cuz my hair is suffering from the ceramic straightener no matter what I do to fight the damage! Some people still need to style chemically treated hair but the style is easier to acheive and lasts longer anyway. My straighter is by conair and cost $25. I hate conair but this product is my exception. It rocks!

Well, I have done both. I did chemical straightening a long time ago (well, for me) and to be truthful it didn't work especially well for me. My hair is very wavy, not quite curly, and dry so I don't know if that would affect it. It did help but not as much as I would have liked.
If I want my hair straight, I prefer the straightening iron. It certainly takes longer since you have to do it every time you wash, but I think it definitely works better. Though I suppose it really depends on the texture of your hair, and how long it is, since that affects how long it will take you ...
Good luck!

More info needed. What's your race? What state is your hair in now?
I'm black and therefore NEED a chemical process to straighten my hair, but then I have to use a ceramic flat iron to maintain the look or it'll be frizzy. Ceramic is a godsend it keeps me from getting split ends, and I can use it every day (if I wanted) without burning my hair. You can get great ones and discounted prices at folica.com

I like the iron...the chemicals are so bad for your hair. I use a serum when staightening my hair to help protect it from the heat.

well they are both going to damage your hair. depending on how curly your hair is . most likely you will not get it totally straight.so you will still have to flat iron it. even if you do get it straight you will still at least have to use a giant curling iron on it every day . to make it look smooth and healthy. and not limp and dry. and you will have to retouch your new growth one every month or too because straight hair with curly roots looks bad. and so it will become very costly after time trying to maintain it.and after a while it will cause your hair to start breaking off..my advice as someone with curly hair and also being a hairstylist for 11 years. learn to manage your hair curly. find the right products to put in to make it look nice . and just live with it. go to the salon get it trimmed and ask your stylist to show you how to maintain your curl so it look nice. good luck..

it depends on if you straighten your hair everyday with a iron straightener then, i think u should get it checmically straightened because it gives ur hair more damage if you let your hair face the hot iron everyday.. instaed get it the checmical ironed.. which dameges your once.. but your hair stays straightened for a long time..
