Nic is correct. A couple of decades ago, Mark Hoffman forged a document about Joseph Smith, the first president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in hopes that he could sell the forged document as an authentic one and make some money. This document, called the "Salamander Letter", apparently said something about Joseph Smith receiving information from a salamander. The document is false, and salamander thing is false. Hoffman ended up trying to cover up his forgeries by killing people with car bombs. Big trouble. Very sad.

You are referring to the salamander letter. It was one of several forged documents by Mark Hofman, trying to discredit the Mormon church. But in the end, they were proved fraudulent.
