Haha, My jack russell Gotti, cant grasp the idea of holding it. I walk him 3 times a day and feed him 2 times a day...He goes but for some reason he cant hold it when he's not walked. I dont know if its still because he is a puppy. He's 9 months. Jeez, he knows how to sit, lay, gimme five, roll over, chew my favorite stilettos! But he cant grasp the hold it part. I put him in his crate and am sloooowly seeing progress. When I let him out, he goes straight for the door. But 1 hour later....ugh forget it. I dont want him to live in his crate!! I've already used puppy pads and they dont work. Of course he goes right next to it. And I put a doggy diaper on him because he squirts when he's excited....It works but I change it constantly...lol...Anyone got ideas? I dont wanna get rid of him but i'm getting frustrated. He's so smart, a good watch dog, and very friendly....

Eliminate the potential that it's a medical problem. He could have a urinary tract infection which makes it difficult for him to control where he urinates. Some puppies are prone to these. If it's not medical problem, try this: Take him outside and make a HUGE deal when he potties where he's supposed to. I mean HUGE-dance around, say "good Gotti!", give him lots of praise, and a treat. When he eliminates where it's undesirable, gently scold him, take him outside and stay with him until he does it there and have the "potty party". He will eventually catch on and you can stop making a fool of yourself outside. (What's a little embarrassment for clean floors?!) Took my dog a week to get that going outside was the only acceptable place. Good luck!

It is hard for puppies to hold it for very long. Their bladders just aren't that big, and they have to learn how to do that. I have 2 pomeranians who also are very smart and can do all kinds of tricks, but it did take quite a while to teach them to consistently go outside. I got pretty frustrated, too, but, believe me, it does get better! A couple of things worked for me. I not only took them out after waking and meals, but I consistently took them out every hour until they got it. Another thing is to take him for a ride in the car and let him out when you get back from your little trip. What puppies need is consistency. Puppies also can sense your frustration, and since they're not sure what they're doing wrong, they can pick on that frustration which can make the problem worse. Just be patient. He'll eventually "get it.":)

do you scold him (gently) when he goes in the house? And praise him when he goes outside? Are those 3 walks the only time he is outside? If so, he probably needs to go out more frequently. My dogs go out when they first get up, once after breakfast, as soon as I get home, after dinner, for an evening walk and then before bed.

i wonder if it's possible for dogs to have bladder problems....

Puppies, especially small dog puppies need to go out at least 5 times a day - sometimes more. Small dogs have small bladders and they can't hold it like a big dog.

Call your vet. He may need a check up as it could be a medical problem.

Good Luck!
