Florence is magnificent. I'll never forget my first visit there. Spying the Duomo and the sprawl of the city from the train. Its a medieval set out so there are many windy alleys and ancient dwellings. The hub of the city is the Piazza della SIgnora, here you'll find a huge square where in antiquity, jousts were held and it is flanked by the Palazzo Vechio, Uffizi and the Loggia. It's a lovely place to watch the sun set in a pavement cafe and see the bats circling the campanile. There are many such square in Florence and many loggia. Some of them are host to market stalls. The food is wonderful and the gelato delicious. There are lots of food shops which sell sandwiches, savouries and ice cold melon chunks. If you like art, Florence is Mecca. Their museums and galleries hold unparalled collections of the Renaissance master's works. If you decide to go there, get an Eyewitness Travel Guide and this will give you a good idea of where to go and what to see. This area is so rich in culture that it would take a book to explain all that there is. Take the plunge and go. It is truly stunning.
Buon fortuna

This is just one of those places that you can't help but like. I'm sure that it's not perfect and living there and dealing with all of the tourists would be a pain at times but we're talking Florence.....Italy.....come on! I just got back from there a few weeks ago. I traveled there when I was 20 years old and even at that time I told myself I had to go back and see more of this wonderful place. Well, 30 years later, I did just that and I wasn't disappointed.
I would suggest late May or early June to travel.
PS I will go back again.

Between 50 and 60 percent of all the catalogued art in the world is in Italy, and nearly half of it is in Florence, The birthplace of the renaissance. It is an incredibly beautifiul city, with some of the most beautiful churches. I could go on, but you get the idea.

I didn't spend much time in Florence, but it is definitely worth seeing. I prefer Siena, which is only a one hour bus ride away. If you go to Florence, don't miss eating at Il Latini. It is an institution for good reason. Controlled chaos and tons of fun!

I enjoyed Florence, however the streets seemed to be dirtier than other places in Italy I've visited.

I'm very happy to have a sister living there. I visit her regularly, and there is always something interesting to visit which I have not seen before.
Personally my favorite city in Europe before Paris (lived there).
