Religion is a belief and strict following of the teachings of something. Spirituality is merely the belief part.

Religion is following a set of ceremonies and beliefs in a church, temple, etc., and not being open to other ideas, other religions, and other beliefs.

Spirituality is embracing an eclectic approach to learning, striving to live by The Golden Rule, and serving others.

Some people who are religious are also spiritual. But there are many more who are spiritual but not religious.

Near Death Experience research points to The Light on the Other Side, which is nonliving and infinite, not caring about one's religion, only one's spirituality.

The upshot: better to be spiritual than to be religious.

I consider myself spiritual but not religious. Religion implies you are part of a group where there are rules and structure and someone else tells you how and who and what to worship. Being spiritual means, I do believe in powers I cannot see but I do not feel the need to follow any creed or belief system that humanity has invented.

Religion is a collection of canned-beliefs involving some sort of supposed supposed supernatural entit(y)(ies), and the myths and superstitions associated with them... accompanied by the assertions that these myths and superstitions are 'true', and involving some kind of worship and/or adoration toward those entities. In other words, profound delusion and folishness.

Spirituality involves an individual's quest to achive some sort of understanding of existence and reality, and one's place in it... potentially including some sort of direct experience of or interaction with reality, unmediated by the senses. Because of limitations imposed by the way we are wired, and the way we are shaped by our environment, complete realization of these aims is highly unlikely... perhaps impossible. However, it has been said "It is the journey that matters; not the destination."

Spirituality is a worthwhile pursuit. Religion is nothing more than a brain-killer.

P.S.: There is nothing inherently 'supernatural' about spirituality. There is no reason to believe in the 'supernatural'. Supernatural is a cop-out concept that is applied when we encounter something in the natural world that we are not able to explain in terms of what we KNOW about the natural world. Since we cannot explain it in terms of what we know about the natural world, it is best to just say that... we can't explain it... we don't understand it... than it is to affix some kind of supernatural connotation to it.

For example, thunder and lightening used to be caused by angry gods. Now it is well understood phenomenon.

Disease used to be caused by demons. Now it is understood to be caused by bacteria, viruses and genetic malfunctions.

The sky used to be thought to be a solid barrier called the 'firmament', created by God to separate heaven and earth. It had a bunch of tiny lights affixed to it, called 'stars', which were put there by god to serve as omens and portents. Now, we know that the sky is NOT a solid structure, and that stars are actually suns, much like our own, and that there are roughly about 200,000,000,000 in our own galaxy, and about 20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of them in the visible universe... far more than the thousand or so that are visible to the naked eye.

Look up 'god of the gaps'.
