I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old and it has been trial and error, but I have learnt that with a lot of exercise and play during the day, and a good routine, I can get them both in bed by 7.30. At present my 3 year old is ready by about 6.30 and my 1 year old a little later.
Remeber, a good routine will help and a good run around in a park, soft play centre or playgroup will help wear them out too.
Good luck.

My daughter turned one in March. Her bedtime is generally around 8:30. She generally doesn't get up before 7 am, if that early. She takes one nap during the day after lunch. That's usually around 1-1:30.
My friend has two kids. One turned three in March, the other will be two in October. The younger one goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 every day. Unfortunately, they never started setting a bedtime for the older one and she has a tendency to stay up as late as she wants.
I personally feel that anywhere from 8-9 is good for both of them. There is really no reason for a three year old to be up past 9 and I don't think it's right to put a child to bed before 8. That's just way too early. Especially if both parents work...just my opinion. Hope it helps! :-)

It depends on lots of things. My son is nearly 5 and has gone to bed at round about 8:00 pm since he was 3. I couldn't get him to bed any earlier as I work and simply could not rush around every night in order to achieve 7:00 p m. Anyway there is no point as he wakes at about 6:30 - 7:00 am no matter what time he goes to bed. We start at 7:00 pm with a bath, then down stairs for quiet play or watch quiet program then at about 7:45 he can choose to stay up til 8:00 and only get one story or he can choose 2- 3 if he goes at 7:45. Either way we aim to be downstairs by 8:15 even if he is awake. When he was smaller he didn't like us to go downstairs so we still left his room but said we had to tidy up in our bedroom or go on the computer in the spare bedroom - i,e, any excuse to let him know we were still upstairs but had something to do that would keep us close by.
now he is happy to be left wide awake and settle himself.
i suggest you start that with the 3 year old and play it by ear with the one year old for now.
good luck

A one year old cannot really have a set bed time, you should play it by ear with them. A three year old's bed time should be decided based on what they do during the day, what time you tend to get up and whether the child has a nap during the day or not.
I would suggest though, that it not be later than 9pm as ultimately adults need private time without their kids, the best parents get time away so that they can devote their attention to their kids as much as possible when they are around them.

I would put them to bed at the same time. It's not fair to say that because one is older than the other that one can stay up later than the other. Usually between 7:30 & 8:00 is a good time. Or, approximately 2-3 hours before YOUR BEDTIME. Kids that young should be getting between 10-12 hours of sleep a day. Good luck with that. :)

It depends on the children. Some kids handle less sleep better than others. Look at when they are going to bed. Are they tired and cranky the next day? If so they arn't getting enough. If not then they are ok. If they have too much energy then they may be getting too much sleep. Let them stay up 30 minutes later. Most kids will sleep what they need. Do you wake them up in the morning or do they wake up on their own? This will give you some idea too.

i have 2 boys one at 15 one at 4 and they were both in bed for 6ish at that age and napped in the afternoon although now my 4 yr old has`nt napped since he was 2 and is going to sleep later and later but it probably depends how active they are during the day and i cannot bath him at night as it keeps him awake so we do that in the morning, i`m sure he will get back into a routine before he starts school

my one year old daughter goes to bed at 7 and her three year old brother goes to bed at about quarter past after his stories. Depends what time they wake up in the morning though, might need to go to bed earlier if tired.
