There many of wars going on in the world right now or had recently been fought in the past that have a least something to do with Islam, i.e. Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, etc. It seems to me that there are those that want to set up and Islamic state at the expense of all other belief systems. I suspect that we are already in world war 3 with militant Islam. I also am wondering if some of the wars in Southeast Asia are related to this subject as well as the recent riots in France. I do not want to overstep my bounds by misunderstanding some of these situations which could be nationalistic or related to other social issues. I would appreciate any respectful comments on this subject.

brianna_the_..., good question but need I remind you we are a secular nation. I would believe it has more to do with oil first then Christianity. Christianity is neutered even in America. I'm sure this is what is being preached to recruit more militants. The truth of the matter is that if Iraq stabilized and asked us to leave, we would, & without their oil I might add. Hopefully the people remaining could peacefully choose Islam, Christianity. Buddhism, or any, or no religion of their choosing. Is this what we are being demonized for?

YaHabibeDisney, I hope you can see I delineate the difference between Islam and militant Islam. Some Muslims kill others that do not adhere to their dysfunctional beliefs. You may indeed believe in peace but if you were in another area of the world and criticized some of the more radical members of the Islamic community you could find yourself, imprisoned, raped, tortured & or killed. This also has happened in Christendom. The difference is that Christianity now exists amongst a secular society. However there is movement within the Islamic community to recreate theocracies. In fact they already exist such as in the case of Iran, and in large part in Saudia Arabia, Pakistian, etc via the influence of the powerful clerics. This is a serious problem that cannot be ignored. It is not about bashing all Muslims, but more so about confronting the rogues.

Happy!, I liked you answer but I in part do not agree with you about religion and war. Religions may not cause war but they are often a pretext to fight them. There are dysfunctions in a variety of religious texts that don't help either. People must work over time to interpret them in peaceful ways. I believe we need new texts to avoid hateful interpretations. The texts should be clear, not muddy or out of historical and sometimes even moral context.

I don't really know about the history of Chechnya. Regarding the other examples, maybe in some cases it's religion and in other cases it's nationalism. (And I'm sure that there is soooo much that we don't know about regarding these wars.) In either case, it's not truly about Islam, it's about the people on both sides fighting the wars. Afterall, religion doesn't start wars or kill, people do. Are these wars related to militant/extremist Muslims? That's very possible. Is it ONLY about them...are they the only bad guys? I highly doubt it. War is never that simple.

The below qoute should get you started...then click the link below for more in depth info...

"Russian Cossacks lived in Chechnya (Terek) since the 16th century. The first Russian invasion of Highland of Chechnya occurred during the time of Peter the Great, in the early XVIII century. After a long series of fierce battles and bloody massacres, Chechnya was incorporated into Russia in the 1870s. In 1936 Soviet leader Joseph Stalin created the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1943, contrary to the postwar rumours, Chechens didn't stage a rebellion against Russian rule but reportedly about 40,000 Chechens fought most bravely against the Nazis within the Red Army. Nevertheless, the next year Stalin as a part of his infamous policies deported more than 1 million Chechens, Ingushes, and other North Caucasian peoples to Siberia and Central Asia on the pretext that they had collaborated with the Nazis. The remaining Muslim people of the Chechnya region were resettled among neighboring Christian communities. Stalin's brutal policy virtually erased Chechnya from the map, but Soviet first secretary Nikita Khrushchev permitted the Chechen and Ingush peoples to return to their homeland and restored their republic in 1957."

Yes, it does. The Chechnyians wish to set up an Islamic state and are willing to kill everyone else in the area to do that. Sound familiar??
