How much food would you have to give before a dog would stop eating it?

We keep food in our dogs bowl at all times. I have heard that you should feed them a specific amount twice a day but I have 3 kids and sometime she just doesn't have the time or peace to eat LOL. But she is very fit, not at all fat and very active with the boys. She will, alot of times, eat half her food and walk away. I think dogs that overeat lick you are talking about may have had an experience in their lives where they didn't get enough food. My brothers dog does this and they got him from the shelter where he had been a "frat" dog.

Dog Unlimited

That depends on the dog. Some dogs will eat what they want and leave the rest for later. Some will keep eating until they get sick, throw up, and start eating again. I've had both types of dogs, and have found that, in the long run, it's better to just give them what they need at set times of the day rather than fill the bowl. That way the ones that keep eating won't get sick, and the ones that eat only what they want don't have to put up with stale food.

The answer, of course, is yes. The dog may die from overeating, but it would have to stop eating at that point.

A dog's appetite is regulated, so unless that area of the brain has a problem, even a dog will stop eating eventually. Unfortunately, and some people have this problem as well, our brain doesn't signal that we are full until well after we are actually done eating - which affords us a lot of extra time to keep eating. And dogs tend to eat a lot faster than we do - so it does appear they will keep on eating forever.

But rest assured, one way or another, they cannot.

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.

An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.

One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:

"Dog Whispering"

This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.

It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.

"Reward Training"

Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.

"Clicker Training"

Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.

"Ultrasonic Whistle"

Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.

Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.

Yes, they will, but some don't know to stop before they are in trouble.

Dogs that are fed once a day tend to do the most overeating when unlimited food is available. Also dogs that have starved at some point will overeat until they are sick. I have always free-fed my dogs since they were pups and none will overeat.

And as to the amount of food, that depends on how big the dog is.

I'd say 14-18 years is about the average for the UK. My first cat lived to 15. My current two are 14 and 15 years old - the 15 year old has had a serious, inoperable heart condition since about age 8 but she's doing fine on meds and still reasonably active! All my cats are fed on James Wellbeloved food (the senior blend now) it doesn't have any 'dodgy' ingredients - all natural and organic stuff. Its recommended by a lot of vets for cats with food allergies.

A dog's brain is wired to eat as much as possible, because it doesn't know when his next meal is coming. It can be very dangerous to leave unlimited amounts of food, especially if the breed is prone to bloat (a lethal condtion if not treated promptly) Follow the recommendations on the package or by what your vet rcommends, Constant and excessive eating and drinking can be signs of other diseases. My dog has Cushing's disease and that was one of the signs.

Yes.

In my house my son is supposed to feed the dogs. However being 12 he doesn't remember every day. He get's around this by leaving the box that we store the food in open so the dogs can get food from it when he "forgets."

The dogs don't eat it all.

However, we now have mice that have moved into our garage.
They don't eat it all either.

Only a puppy will over eat. An older dog will not over eat and some pet owners have an automatic feeder that replenishes after it reaches a certain level or weight in the bowl. Puppies learn after a few months when enough is enough.
