United States and Canadian citizens including newborn infants, are required to have a valid passport if traveling to any foreign port during your cruise and to re-enter the United States . An original or a certified copy of your birth certificate in lieu of a passport is acceptable for cruises to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Bermuda or Hawaii for now, however, a passport is required after December 30, 2006 FOR ALL CRUISES RETURNING TO U.S. AFTER DECEMBER 30, 2006, as birth certificates will no longer be an acceptable form for any destination. A passport is required now, if calling on or coming from a foreign port during your Hawaiian cruise. Passport expiration date must not occur within six (6) months of the termination date of your cruise.

You may not need a passport if you are going out of the US and come back before the end of this year. But it will save you a lot of hassle traveling outside the country and MOST IMPORTANTLY, a passport will be required of all US citizens to reenter the USA starting January 1, 2007. Once you get the passport you will be set for 10 years. The web site below will answer all of your questions about passports.
Passports are issued by the US Department of State. But you can get the application at your local post office. If not, just go online to the passport office web site below. You will need two small photos to go with your application and you can usually get those at a AAA office, some travel agencies do them and other places advertize passport photos. You can take your application to the post office or mail it to the passport office. If you need the passport in a hurry, you can request expedited service and pay extra for the express mailings. The normal processing time is about six weeks, but you can request AND pay for expedited service and get your passport in about two weeks. My bet is the closer to the end of this year we get, the longer normal processing will take because more people will be applying because they are going out of the country. I suggest that you apply as soon as possible.

That depends on where the Cruise is going. IF you go on an Alaskan Cruise and all the ports are US then NO. IF your visiting a separate country you will need one. As of right now you do not need one for Canada but you will in 07'. You will want to look at the cruise itinerary it may tell you for sure, or call the cruise company and ask.

Starting December 31st of this year (2006) EVERYONE will need a passport to travel anywhere on a cruise. As of right now, you do not need a passport for the Caribbean or for Mexico or Alaska. You need your birth certificate with the raised seal and a government issue photo Id.
All kids will need a passport Dec31st as well but as of right now, kids fifteen and under will need only their birth certificate with the raised seal.

Most likely if the cruise is going outside the U.S. It would be a good idea to have one anyway. It can take two months or more to get one. Check with your post office for documents you need, qualifications for the picture, and prices. Expect at to spend at least $75. A passport is good for about ten years.

A passport makes life easier and is good for 10 years. I'd say, whenever you're in doubt, get the passport.
