Literal belief in Bible down
By Preetom Bhattacharya
Religion News Service
A little more than one quarter of Americans believe the Bible is the literal word of God, down 10 percentage points since 1976.
According to a recent survey by the Gallup Poll, 28 percent of Americans believe the Bible is literally true, compared to 38 percent 30 years ago. The survey was conducted among 1,002 adults, aged 18 or older. Nearly half, 49 percent, said the Bible was the "inspired word of God," while 19 percent called it an "ancient book of fables." Only 3 percent had no opinion.
Eddie Gibbs, professor of church growth at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., said the "responses are cultural rather than reflecting of a deeper personal belief; the Bible has lost its position of cultural prominence."

No, I'm not surprised, there is more education in the U.S. now than there has ever been. Education is religion's/god's biggest threat! (By god I mean the idea of god.)
Thanks for the info!

No, not surprised, the Bible predicts a great apostasy in the latter times, you can see it everyday. Look at the 9th Circuit Court, the Episcopal Church, abortion, priority of homosexual agenda, filth and obsenity in music and on TV, even TV preachers like Joel Osteen watering down the gospel. That is not as scary as it seems because we know it's another sign, but it's still worrisome.

How about this, 30 years ago prayer was still in school. Moral values was taught. Help your neighbor was taught. Tell me have we gone forward or back to the stoneage. Values come from the Bible if nothing else. Try teaching children moral values and see what happens, such as honor thy mother and father. OOOOPS bad words huh.

I agree education finaly takes over and soon there will be no more religions ( it will take while tough)
Believing in GOD does not requrie bible or churches, its between person and his belives.
Its about time they put the terrible book ( bible ) down and start using thier brains.
Therefore GOD hates education.

As people are turning more secular, and godless, less belief in the Bible would of course happen.
When Jesus returns on the cloud, the poor souls will wish they believed in it. They will 'beat themselves in lamentations', when the time comes.

People become more educated and more of them understand what is translation, especially taking into account how the Bible reached present time and how many times it was translated from each of languages.

I am not at all surprised. This merely fulfills prophecy.
Jesus Himself mentioned this in one of His discourses, "...But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" (Luke 18:8b)
Paul tells Timothy, "For the time will come when people will not put up with healthy doctrine but with itching ears will surround themselves with teachers who cater to their own needs. They will refuse to listen to the truth and will turn to myths." (II Timothy 4:3-4)
In fact, I believe it will get much worse: "Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in union with Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse as they deceive others and are themselves deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and found to be true, because you know from whom you learned it." (II Timothy 3:12-14)

Time is on the side of logic and common sense. Eventually god will go the way of Zeus, Ra, etc.
