I agree with your assessment. After 9-11, we had the support of the world, we had a sense of unity. I no longer feel it, nor do the people that I converse with. I was a registered voter with one of the two main parties, I went down and had myself changed to an "independent"...not dem or rep. My sense is that the party lines in politics have driven people apart. Broad generalized statements from both parties about the other party contribute nothing to getting a sense of patriotism. We need to think in terms of individuals, abilities,..not parties. I know my small gesture is meaningless, but if enough people said."Hey, I am an American, I am not a dem or rep.........I am just an American" - convince me that you are right for the job and I will vote for you. I probably listen to the news too much, I am burdened and sad of heart because of how Americans are perceived and how some of us now see ourselves. I recall being proud that America was powerful, but kind.....respected by the majority of the world.....- now, I miss that feeling. In truth, I miss my country............in my heart.

I think rocknroll's answer is a great representation of why the country is so divided. It all started with the politicians currently in place on both sides of the fence doing nothing but pointing fingers at the other side instead of getting any real work done. It also doesn't help that the President went on tv and said 'if you're not with us, then you're against us'. That gave the go-ahead to be vicious towards democrats for having a difference in opinion on how the country should be run. I've read reports of people being fired from their jobs for supporting a democratic candidate. That is simply not how this country was based to be run and it's sad that it's continuing. I don't know how this can be remedied because those in Congress and the White House discovered that pointing fingers seems to be a successful means to get re-elected. I believe this will continue for a long time until everyone wakes up and says that it is unacceptable and they need to start earning their paychecks.

The division in this country comes from the top. If the Congress and the President cannot agree enough to pass simple legislation, how can the people agree. We will soon have a new President and I think that both parties need to look for someone who can bring us all together again. It really isn't a matter of being Patriotic. I think all Americans are. We just can't agree on what make us Patriots.
I do hope that all who answer your question can be non partisan and give intelligent answers. It would be a relief to have a dialog instead of a diatribe

Give the USA back to the Citizens that are suppose to be in control, kick out all the Lobbyists, Reduce all Goverment Salaries by 50% accross the board. Bring back the Energy Saveings Bills that were started under 4 presidents and then squashed by the Oil Lobby. Instead of raising taxes to put up Berlin Walls and post Gaurds on them, take a step back, look at all the stoopid **** laws that they pass just to here themselves speak and we could prolly save a few billion there.
Get out of Iraq. NOW, seems like all we are doing is makeing more terrorists and they alot madder, but with some reason now that even I can understand. I dont condone it, but heck, if we were invaded by a peacekeeping force, would get a little old after 3 years.
Stop building Nuclear Submarines, when are we ever gonna need a Stealthy Nuclear First Strike capability? Who in there right mind ever did.
Stop all this crazy Militarization and start helping out with the trillions saved here at home. A balanced budget would be nice to see at least once in a lifetime.
Stop and resind all the Homeland Security garbage that took away most if not all of our rights as US Citizens. That yellow bar has been yellow since 2001, Dictators use Fear to keep the populace in control, and whoever is next or woever is in now could seriously abuse the acts contained in that law. (allready happened, but I am remaining as non-partisan as possible here)
Yes, there is a middle ground that all Citizens, Humans living in USA can agree on, lets head for that point, get our own act together then move forward in unison rather than politcol infighting.

It is quite simple. IRAQ. Following 9/11 this country had the sympathy of the entire world that is not Muslim. Even the non-radical Muslims were with us. We had the greatest opportunity we have ever had to rally the world to a sense of freedom for everyone. And to fight terrorism where ever it is.
But King George heard a different drummer.
The opportunity to take out an old enemy could not be resisted. Never mind that there was no real evidence of current wrong doing, we just had to take him out. And it mattered little that only the "coalition of the willing" were with us. What a statement that is.
From that point on we lost our most important advantage. We have gone from the most sympathized country to the most feared. No other country who is willing to defy us is safe. Never mind that we have no right telling them how to run their country.
The resources, put into IRAQ, would have ended terrorism as we know it. But you can't use the military to fight that. You can't be a WAR president if you don't engage the enemy with your military.
Bush blew the best chance we have ever had to truly bring most all other countries to our side. And that is just a small part of what was done wrong.

All Americans are patriotic as a rule, how they believe it should be shown is what differs. Many (but not all) Republicans believe we should support the President during wartime and allow him to conduct it as he sees fit. Many (but not all) Democrats believe that he took America in the wrong direction and is detracting from America's reputation in the world, and that he must change the direction or be changed himself (through either impeachment and removal from office or through voting him out) to restore America to the country it should be (if it is currently wrong in its actions). The situation is unfortunately a very hard one to find middle ground on because everyone has polarized to the extremes and no one can figure out how to restore a consensus again.

Hang liberals for their treachery and treason. It's total crap how they speak of their country.
"And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women"
Deja Vu with Sen. John Kerry, 12/04/05, who believes soldiers are terrorists, yet again.
"Our country is founded on a sham. Our forefathers were slave-owning rich white guys who wanted it their way. So when I see the American flag, I go, 'Oh my God, you're insulting me.' That you can have a gay parade on Christopher Street in New York, with naked men and women on a float cheering, 'We're here, we're queer!' - that's what makes my heart swell. Not the flag, but a gay naked man or woman burning the flag. I get choked up with pride."
-Garafolo, co-host on Air America, 1998
"(W)hen Communist U.S.S.R. was a superpower, the world was better off. The right-wing media is trying to marginalize the peace movement."
-Garafolo, LIBERAL
"Have we gone to war yet?" she asked sarcastically, early on. "We (expletive) deserve to get bombed. Bring it on." Later she yelled, "Let's get rid of all the economic (expletive) this country represents! Bring it on, I hope the Muslims win!"
"Have we gone to war yet? We f****** deserve to get bombed. Bring it on."
-Chrissie Hynde, LIBERAL
"We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I do believe that. I think that religion stops people from thinking. I think it justifies crazies. I think flying planes into a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder."
Bill Maher, the ENLIGHTENED LIBERAL
"The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military ... I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus."
"If we really [believe] that this war is criminal ... then we have to believe in the victory of the Iraqi people and the defeat of the U.S. war machine."
Nicholas DeGenova, Professor of Anthropology, LIBERAL
"When I see an American flag flying, it's a joke." -- Robert Altman, Jan 22, 2002, LIBERAL
I'm sure the founding fathers would have put an end to this treason VERY quickly.

People from both sides need to stop acting like children and realise that we are all Americans and we are both trying to do good for our nation even though our methods may seem alien to each other, we need compromise, unity, and a destruction of ignorance. We also need a leader that is willing to unite and not divide.

Stop invading other countries. Close our overseas bases. Put all those troops on the border. Spend all the money for our own people! When everybody has what they need and decent health care, we might give a rat's patootie about our country!

Honestly, you must remove the politics from this war, and keep reminding the American people why we are fighting. We were attacked by a group of people that do NOT care that some one is conservitive or liberal... we are infidels to them and must be killed, every man, woman and CHILD.
United we stand, divided we fall. Look to he "Hill" to see who is deviding us... Mertha, Palosi, Kennady, and Kerry come to mind. My appologies for the seemingly partisan answer, but I call it how it is shown.
