I can understand that it is interesting to have discussions on Religion. I am a Christian and have my views but I find it interesting to discuss religion with people how have different views then mine. Of course I believe it is important to respect the other persons beliefs whether they be catholic, morman, wiccan or atheist. It is also important not to generalize. And so I have noticed the irony of this as well. It does weem that soom athiests are just as passionate and dogmatic about their beliefs and some of the Christians they seem to so dislike. Some of them seem to be just as driven to "convert" as some of the most fundimental Christians. My theory, and I could be completely wrong, is that some of these atheists have had very bad experiences with fundimentalists. I have too but I make the distinction between them and the entire belief. I don't like zealots whether they are Christian, Muslin, Buddist or Atheist. When I sent to answer this question there were already people who had made angry comments about how Christians are uneducated. Granted, many uneducated Christians can come off as quite ignorate when they just repeat pat answers. But the Christians are stupid and don't know what they are talking about answer is getting quite boring as well. I am not saying we should all just get along but try and use this forum to discuss and learn rather then mud sling.
I think that was a very well phrased question and I hope we can see some honest answers from atheists on this one.

So, in turn, what are you doing?
These kind of questions are antagonizing.
Nobody is changing their mind one way or another on this issue. Have you ever successfully turned an atheist into a Christian? Or vice versa? Didn't think so...
What about focusing on some similarities or some things that we can all agree on - For instance, I was watching the discovery channel and they had a show about Global Warming - turns out the President of the American Family Association (Christian) and a spokesman for the Resources Defense Council (who happens to be atheist if I remember correctly) have joined forces to combat America's oil dependancy... The Christians want to boycott Middle Eastern Terrorists and the left-wing liberals (which include some atheists) want to stop global warming... both of which can be done by reducing oil consumption....
see isn't that better?

It is a public service. Considering that some of the people who visit this forum actually ARE looking for genuine answers, it would be antiethical for a caring person to leave them exposed to answers that originate in the nonrational world of myth, superstition and willful ignorance... i.e., religious belief.
Religious belief is an insidious mind-killer. It implants delusion in the place of actual knowledge, and cuts one off from the honest, open-minded consideration of alternative possibilities.
Caring, rational people like to make seekers aware that there is a lot more to the world/universe than the superstitious nonsense that is spoon-fed to them by people who are absolutely terrified by the idea that they might someday learn to think for themselves.

Why do people attack someone's personal beliefs if it can get them through something? There are a lot of atheists that are attacked by christians, but even christians can find them annoying! People who force their beliefs onto another person would do that anyways, regardless of their religion (though they feel justified by the bible saying to spread the word, which I don't think includes forcing it onto people).

Amazing what happens when bible thumpers hijack the government, isn't it?
I suspect it's going to get a lot worse for fundie Christians before it's all said and done.
The vast majority of Americans really do not want to live under the Christian Taliban, regardless how much the GOP caters to them and promotes their agenda.

Personally, I don't hate Christians b/c they shove their beliefs down my throat, this simply annoys me. I hate the religious because they're wrong and proud of being so.

Exactly right. I see it in people's answers all the time. No matter what people believe (or don't) there's no excuse for disrespecting the beliefs of others.

Other people's beliefs are annoying, nomatter who you are. I see religion as a problem affecting society. I choose this forum to interact with others about it. Your example is like riding on a bus, and someone farts. Annoying, but are you going to hold yours in?

We are fulfilling Nietzsche's quote:
The man who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself.
Besides which, if you see an evil in the world, do you sit back passively and do nothing about it?

You're right, and you can repeatedly see it right here. Like the ignorant questions about Jesus being homosexual, or God is dead. Those very questions are, to me, considered shoving their belief's down our throats, or they wouldn't be here!!!
