i don't think they use them for anything so what gives?

Yes, they do use them. They have a lot of feeling at the base. If a dog is sticking his head like through a hole, or into a can, or through a hole in the fence, the whiskers warn him if it is going to be too tight to get his head back out....Dogs can't tell and judge that much about size, so they rely on tactile feelings.

Brilliant question!!! This is what yahoo answers is all about.

They are from the same family as foxes, so my guess is that its for digging hole, living down them and using whiskers to feel whats at the side of them.

For some reason I thought that whiskers in cats help them balance...and whiskers in dogs help them smell. I could be totally wrong though.

same reason that all animals have whiskers, so they can feel when they putting their faces into to small a space.

All animals use their wiskers for sensory reasons. Touch a dogs wiskers and you'll see what I mean. Their lips will curl up funny when you run your hands through them.

same reason as cats do....to judge width ....like when then enter a norrow crack, wiskers help them decide if they can fit
