Religions that differ from your own? Do you think it is better to let children have knowledge of others' beliefs or to teach them only your own, thouroughly, and them let them study others later in life if they wish? Why or Why not?

I teach my children about other religions, when the subject comes up. I don't make an attempt to fairly and thoroughly reperesent all world religions because I'm not a politically correct moron. That would be like telling your child that black people are equal while you are teaching them to be biased, based on your attitudes, actions and verbal slander. You end up with a bigot child who has no clue that he's has bias.

I'm not Christian, but my son talks to Jesus whenever he feels the need. He asked about Jesus, so I told him. He asked about Buddha, so I told him.
When we are out and about at museums or traveling, we encounter art and artifacts from different countries. I offer explanation that includes values, beliefs, practices.
He hears things I school. I tell him what I believe. I tell him what his Dad believes. He knows that he can believe and practice whatever feels right to him...and he will.

I used to teach religious education at a Roman Catholic church to 2nd graders (making their Reconciliation and their First Communion in the same year). Although I stuck to the curriculum, I often would tell them about other religions and other beliefs, especially Judaism. Although I'm no longer Catholic, nor do I still teach, I believe that I was able to open the minds of the children and hopefully take down any prejudices that they may have had about other religions.

Hi.
I teach my children that there are different religions. I have exposed my children to a few different religions other than mine.
I teach my children to have an open mind & encourage them to express their views. But, I believe I should guide them, in all aspects and I can only teach them from the knowledge & the beliefs that I have.
TY

Not yet.. he wouldn't understand... but I will. The reason? They will see it when they leave my house they will be bombarded with lies and truths and I want him to be able to decipher what is what, to make his own decision on what he believes and if he decideds to believe it. In the end it is their life and their choice. No matter how much I preach my beliefs he doesn't have to believe the same so I want to send him out into the cold, busy world with a head full of knowledge and the ability to see everything for what it is.

I want my kids to have a healthy view of religion. So I will be teaching them about every type of religion. I do not practice religion so I plan to teach them that too. Then when they are adutls they will not be influenced by anything but their education and I will be glad when they make their own choices spiritually.

I think you need to teach your children about different religions without your own opinion and let them choose which one they like the best. That is how i was raised and I didnt choose any religion becuase they all seem silly to me. I think that all parents need to teach their kids to be open minded.

I teach my children the other religions along with my own and tell them the real History of each religion and ask them to use their consciousness to follow a religion of their choice.

If we keep the History aspect of the religion under wraps we will not be doing justice to our children.

Why have a child?
No one has free will, but to give your children the Free-est will you can, you need to show them as many sides of the coin you are able, and build a community of Friends who have more perspectives to add to your own. This way they are making a real choice, not a limited one.
Otherwise you might be trying to duplicate your self for your own childish, needy reasons. Shame on you.

Yes I will with my kids. I want them to chose the religion that makes them happy and fills them with love and spirituality. I was raised in a home with a certain religion, but I had to find my path and couldn't be happier. Likewise, I want my children to have the chance to choose their religion.

That defeats the purpose!! The purpose to teaching your kids your religion from the time they can listen is so that they won't question it. It's just part of their world.

It would be harder for them to have faith in my religion if we complicate it by letting them learn more then decide which is best.
