I am having almost the exact same problem- for the most part I know I want a Canon Powershot... its just a matter or which one. For me, if there was a version that combined the A620 and A700- then it would be perfect. Now that being said, I havn't heard many people talk about the A700!? But right now, that is what I am probably going to end up getting- it has 6X optical zoom, compared the the 4x or 3x of the others- which as you mentioned, you are going to have far shots you want to take.
My recommendations as far as information I've read/seen:
A700- 6x optical zoom, 6MP, manual controls
A620- 4x optical zoom, 7.1MP, flip/twist screen
SD700- very small size, image stabilization, 6MP, 4x zoom
As far as $$ go, I found the A620 as low as $220, the A700 for $272, but the SD700 no less than low $400 range. So that is another factor. Because keep in mind you will have to buy a memory card regardless of which camera you get, and that will add more money.
One other note, is remember that there is a lens adapter and lens you can attach for 1.75x MORE zoom on the A700, and A620 models for increased zoom (in fact i think its 1.75 times more). I'm not sure it the SD700 supports this however.
Good luck to both of us though right!

If you do not mind carrying a little bit bigger camera, I recommend the Powershot S2 IS. It has a 12x zoom with image stabilization(for far away shots), full automatic controls (optional manual controls), and would be a great travel camera.
The S2 IS was my second choice in this type of camera. I actually bought the Sony Cybershot H1, because of the larger LCD screen (2.5 in vs 1.8"). But both cameras would meet your needs and take great pics!
I also have a Sony pocket camera with a 3x zoom, and found that I needed a more powerful zoom when sightseeing. But the bigger zooms are in bigger cameras, so no more carrying in my pocket...
The Canon S2 IS is a 2005 model, so prices are around $350 plus a memory card and rechargeable batteries. You should be able to stay under $400 easily.
Have Fun!

Depends on what features you want on your camera. The Canon SD550 is an excellent camera which I believe is approx $350 at dell.com. If you like an even slimmer camera then there is the Canon SD 600 or the Canon SD630 (with 3inch LCD screen). Personally, I won't go with the 3inch screens as they are battery hoggers and Canon powershot series is known to have poor battery life compared to the competition. If you are willing to shell out a few more dollars, I would highly recommend the Canon SD700 IS. It comes with an Image Stabilizer and also has an improved battery life. So my top recommendations:
Canon SD 700 IS (approx $450)
Canon SD 600 (approx $380)
Canon SD 550 (approx $350)
Canon SD 630 (approx $400)

I have the same problem. I was fascinated by the A610 but I cant find it. Then I went to my local BestBuy and started playing with their powershots it seemed disappointing because I played for 3 minutes and wasn't captivated by it.
