He's between puppy and adult stages. He hasn't wanted to eat much for 3 weeks & is losing wieght... Eyes are clear... Not snappy but listless... They tried to cajole him to eat with pizza but he could only manage the toppings... No vomiting that I know of... They don't have much $ and want an idea of what could be wrong before choosing a vet...

First, check for this. He could have something like a stick jammed across the inside of his mouth between his top teeth - just pry his mouth open and take a look and a smell. Dogs with mouth infections or bad teeth will have bad breath.
If his mouth and his teeth are ok, sounds like he might have a tumor (rare in a young dog) or an intestinal blockage - this is very serious and expensive because he'll need surgery. Dobies are big on eating all kinds of crap, from nylon stockings to rocks. If they can't afford to take him to the vet, they should sign him over to the animal shelter where he'll get the proper care. If they don't, they could be liable for animal cruelty and a $1000 fine - even a jail term for neglecting him. Thanks for trying to help him!

Contact a vet in your area and explain the entire situation to them along with the money issues. The vet may be able to offer some advice, or take the dog and look at it just because they care (Yes...this does happen)
It could be a number of things
I think you should still call a local vet or a low cost clinic and explain the situation to them, if the people are having some trouble, which most do from time to time, then perhaps a vet would see them on a donation only rate. I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know how this all played out.
Thank you

There could be many reasons why your Doberman is losing weight, really you need a full exam with a veterinarian ,blood work and urine tests done and possible x-rays as well. A bowel obstruction would cause the dog to vomit green bile. But anyways like any doctor a veterinarian cannot just look at your pet and say this is the definite answer , diagnostic tests need to be done and the sooner the better. Ask the vet about a payment plan as well.Let me know.

Just what do expect total strangers on YA's to do? We cannot magically treatment your dog online. Funny how people can still afford internet service, but not help for their dogs? Vets take payments. Just like there's help out there for humans, because of the earthquake, I'll bet if you looked, I'll bet that you can find some vet help. Why not call the Red Cross? People who are not smart enough to find some help, shouldn't have pets.

By not taking him to a vet if anyone reports you to the humane society and they come out the cold hard truth is you could be brought up on felony charges, yes you yourself. If they were to come out and you had been to the vets and have proof you are trying to help them they can not do anything to you unless you neglect the care that he more than likely desperatly needs. If you don't have the money right now ask the vet to work with you. If something out of the ordinary ever comes up with my dogs and it ends up being costly my vet works with me without hesitation. Either way I would NOT call around to vets I would go in to the first one that will see him and get the dog seen.

Oh gosh- That could be a number of things, from heartworms to a number of other conditions. Your friends will have to choose a reputable vet. If the vet can't help the dog, he should be able to offer suggestions.
Good luck!

But what food is he been feeding with? Please do not give any Human food to a dog, it will effect his health in later stage of his life, end up when he old, it might happen there will alot of illness strike which mean more medication bill will occur. Are you feeding him on dog food or human food most of the time?? Do your pet has a regular vet clinic to go? You can give the clinic a call mention to the vet ot nurse about his condition.
Please observe your dog carefully and write down about his behaviour, look into his faeces, if it in bulk or...softer than normal, large volumes of watery faeces, in dark color, foul-smelling & appear to contain blood, color changes to it, multi-color, ranging from brown, and green to yellow or greasy-looking faeces etc... Please do write down in a piece of paper, if not when you really to bring him to the vet, you will sure forget all the symptoms which inccured to your dog before. Please bring the paaper along with you.
Since it sound as you are totally unknow about dog, please try to pick up books from library or information thru website to know more about it. You definitely will gain alot from it, if you really love dog alot! :)
And at this moment, I think the best way is to bring him to the vet without delay or sorry for later on.

i am a vet so trust me you need to go to the nearest vet and they will examen him and then see what is wrong with him but if i think he has what i think he does the operation will cost lots of $ and if you dont have alot then you may want to think of putting it to sleep. im sorry but that is the truth i am very sorry for your dog : ( and it is very cruel that you've let it not eat for this long i think it might have kidney failure or its heart or a viral infection. Beilieve me if your dog have a viral infection it can cost up to 2-3 thousand dollars!
oh so its not your dog well pass this info please it hurts to hear of such a cruel personn its very sad!: (

has he been vaccinated? it could be anything from kidney failure to ingestion of a toxin to a viral infection - he needs to be seen by a vet NOW!!! it is cruel to let the dog be sick for three weeks without any treatment. the longer you wait, the worse it will be for the dog.

Maybe parvo, has he been vaccinated? Black and tans are highly suseptable. What is his stools like? That would probably indicate best way to discover a problem. Is his tummy bloaty? I would answer these questions and re-ask your question.
