They are just worried about you because of all of the sick people online that are killing people. Maybe they are afraid that you will give out some kind of information that will get you hurt or killed. Maybe you can sit down and talk to them and explain that you are not going to meet anyone on here and that you will ignore anyone that tries to talk dirty to you. And if that doesn't work then you don't have that much longer anyway till your 18 and don't have to have their permission. Just remember that they are only worried about your safety.

Tell them you'll let them check out IM from time and again and they can block the chatroom features...at 17 you should be able to do anything like that...you could drive a car cross country i think you can handle chatting

Let them watch you IM for a while . When they believe that you would not do anything stupid like before, they will let you IM again. Or wait till your 18th birthday and move out. You can IM whoever you want.

Sit down with them and tell them that you are mature and responsible enough to chat online. Tell them you've watched all the Oprah show's about kids getting kidnapped from meeting people on myspace and that you know your smarter then them. Good luck!

My parents were like that too. Tell them you are only talking to people you know, let your friends talk to them to prove to them you are not lying. Then with them behind you show them you can block people not on your buddy list, by going to edit-settings. I did this and they were open-minded.
