I originally sent in payments for 2005 tax return on April 15. I noticed I made a mistake and I sent in an amended return. Now state of NJ owes me refund. The payment I made on April 15, can I get that money back now? or is that money that gets credited toward 2006 tax return since it was made in 2006.

My question is when I put in amended tax return, do I put the payment I originally paid on 4-15-06 as a tax payment for credit for 2005, or should i just leave it blank, and apply that money for 2006 tax return.

the current tax year is 2005. if you originally believed that you owed taxes, and you made the payment for taxes owed on 4-15-06, then that money would be applied to that return. i would add the payment you made as estimated money on the amended return, and attach a photocopy of the check, as well as a letter stating what happened. the money will be refunded to you either way, unless you specify you want it to be credited towards 2006 taxes.

Did you have the refund applied toward 2006 taxes? If not, you will receive the money as soon as they process the amended return.
