Everything happens for a reason. Just because we don't know what it is, doesn't mean there's no meaning behind it. My husband's sister was killed in cold blood by her husband, and he questions the same thing you do. I am the first person to admit I don't know it all, but I once was told the following that may help:
Maybe your friend died at the time he did because he would have done something later on that would have jeapordized his immortal soul. He was taken away before that could happen.
Maybe people get killed because of what they would do later in life - look at the suffering that would have been prevented if Hitler were aborted at birth as his mother originally intended.
Maybe people die because it will benefit mankind in someway. Ex: Jesus. Judas was to betray Jesus. If he wouldn't have, Jesus wouldn't have died for our sins.
God doesn't do these things to us, but allows them to happen, ie: free will. It's the devil that takes pleasure in the sin these monsters create.
Some believe suffering builds character, and shape our lives so that we may be ready to meet him when the time comes. Some believe that we would not appreciate the joys and blessings in our lives if not for the suffering we have to endure. It helps us see what is real and good. I personally believe we are constantly being tested by the decisions we make. And the prize is heaven.
Like I said, I'm no religious guru, and many upon thousands will disagree with what I've written, as everyone's beliefs are different. It doesn't mean any of them are correct. Neither may be mine, but it's a few of the things I've heard along the way that helps to console.

One God allows us the freedom to do what we want. He will not step in unless asked. From the moment that Adam ate the fruit offered to him by his wife, this world was in trouble.
Without the pain we can't grow and would not be able to help others going through same or similar thing. Man chooses what happens. (Not saying that your friend chose to die.) But until this world ends, the pain and suffering will not end.
We feel empty because we don't want God in our lives. We make the choice to feel empty and be alone. We choose to go through life on our own without help (from God).
I am sorry about your friend. That is not right. But God will judge the person for committing murder.
This is the best I can do. I know it may not help, but I did try my best.

I believe there is a higher power and I have had some pretty rotten things dealt to me. My mom (3/22/2005) my niece after helping to deliver her died 3 1/2 months later. Things happen for a reason, we dont agree or understand them. I think everything that does happen somehow enriches us, gives us a better understanding of life. I belive the good die young and keep coming back til they make a difference. And the evil people live forever and never really truly die.

We live in a Society where we must be educated not only to protect ourselves and our people, but to be cautious that every time you leave your place of home you venture into a world gone stray.
If you put a gun to your head and pull the trigger do you think God will stop you/think again.
Take control of your self and your actions and be very aware of Angels that come in sheep's clothing.
Teach your children the way of the world and teach them that nothing is safe and to be safe is not to put your self in harms way ignorantly for no reason, but to always be observant of your surroundings. You have an ear so listen and you have a mouth to speak and an eye to see. So use them diligently.

i have asked the same question my friend for many years,, the simple answer in my opinion is,, that there is no god,,as we are led to believe
i feel strongly that god is what you are,,within your own conscious mind,,
that would explain why you feel guilty about even insignificant event in your life,,
most decent people attempt to lead a caring friendly lifestyle but unfortunately like most creatures we have some very bad people out there with no thoughts for fellow man,,
the sooner the courts take a zero tollerance on these idiots the better,, life should mean life and no time off for so called good behavior,, what time off do the innocent people who have been murdered get ???what time off do the friends and family of a victim get???
have a peacefull life my friend and dont let the minority spoil your attitude to lfe
good luck

Wow, now there's an age-old question. First, I like the passion you bring to this question. But the question really is, is that passion real. It's easy enough to rail and storm about the injustice of God's world. The question is: What are you DOING about it. No need to answer me. Just answer to yourself, and maybe your friend.
Can you see that that is the whole point? Its not what life consists of or what it does to you or anyone else. Its what is you REACTION to it. Oh and P.S.: God didn't give these monsters anything, nor will he give anything to you, except salvation. The rest is pretty much up to you. Accept it, suck it up, and get on with it.

Every thing you have is a gift from God. The only things that are truely yours are your decisions and the consequinces that come with them. God is love. All things that are bad or evil are not of God, but of the devil. People who do not come to know Christ and choose to live a sinful lifestyle may not pay for they're wrongs here on earth, but they will when they leave! We may endure a lot of pain in our life, but we will NEVER endure the pain Jesus Christ endured for us.

God gave us the gift to make our own decisions and choices ... and it's those choices that determine our ultimate demise once it comes "Judgement Day" .. for those innocents caught at the wrong end of anothers bad decision -they are already living in Heaven ... for those who continue to live with the gifts of freedom and making bad decisions remember - what comes around goes around ... I firmly believe that and am witness to it. Don't let a group of morons take away your joy in life ... also, STOP watching the News ... unfortunately, our society is facinated in human suffering and destruction ... and you'll hear all about it watching the news ... be selective of what you see on TV and read. CHOSE to look for the better of society and you will find it. It's all about choices .... I am sorry for your loss ...

I don't think God is the one responsible for pain, really. But like you, I also don't understand why the world is in the condition it is.
In Catholicism, eternal bliss is supposed to come in the afterlife (heaven), so really suffering is a part of the journey on earth. When we die, the good will be rewarded in heaven and the bad will go to hell.

Because of the question that Adam and Eve brought up in the first place. In them deciding not to trust God and to eat from the tree in the garden, the put into question God's sovereignty - his right to rule over us. By eating the fruit, Adam and Eve were saying that they wanted to decide for themselves right and wrong and to rule themselves. So we as human beings have been allowed to rule ourselves so far. Until God decides it's time for Armagedon, it will be like that.
