Donate your time.
If you are looking for a high return on your contribution the only way to guarantee it is to role up your sleeves. If you have some business skills you could also serve on the board of directors for a small charity. People who keep things going are invaluable in small organizations.

The impact is more to you on the giving than to anyone who you give to. Try it...you'll see what I mean. But to answer your question, I give 5% locally and 5% nationally. Also, check out www.give.org to be sure the charities you choose are using the money well. God Bless You (and he will, you'll see).

Contribute to a local charity. You will see more results helping your own community.

Keep your money and before you donate it to a charity, be sure that the % goes to outfits with lots of volunteers -- Assistance Leagues, and Hospice for example. Charities like The Red Cross, Children's Funds etc, have huge expenses, and people on HUGE salaries, meaning that your $ doesn't go very far......

I truly think that your contributions should aid local charities as these beneficiaries are your neighbors and in your community. Also the fwere people "handling" your contribtuion assures that more money goes to where you wanted it to go.

Usually local is the best option, but there are always exceptions to the rule... The best option in any case is to research the charity beforehand and make sure it is legit, there are so many scammers out there these days, you have to be sure you are not being scammed by any of them...

Stay with local charities. Your dollar would have less impact with the large ones because their overheads are higher.

In our distance learning classes at school, we usually go by this: "think globally, act locally." Find something local that might cause changes on a higher level.

I always donate to the Salvation Army , they are always there when one needs help. During WW2 in Europe they helped us, we never saw the Red Cross. I always want to know that the CEO's of these charities are not walking away with the major portion of my donation.

I understand the Salvation Army has the highest % of monies donated going directly to the needy. I also do local drives that I can see where its going.
